I have retro fitted an OBC to my 318is and seem to be having trouble getting the Range and capacity to set right.

I understand that when the fuel gauge light comes on the litres left in the tank should be 3.5ltrs (pressing 1 and 1000 on the small buttons together). I had a chance tonight to calibrate it. So on come the light, I pulled over and turned the trim pot behind the blank plug but could only get it down to 5ltrs. There was another quater turn of adjustment, but 5 ltrs was it.

I found the point where 5 ltrs shows and then adjusted back more to where I thought 3.5 ltrs would be. The range was showing 42miles, but I did another 15 miles and this only dropped to 40miles. The capacity still reads 5ltrs.

Filled the car to the brim and it shows 46ltrs. (Took 53ltrs to fill, so I know there must have been around 3 ltrs in the tank when the light come on)

Is this what to expect? My M3 which was fited OBC from new goes down to zero miles when you are really low.

The OBC has the proper 318is code plug fitted.

Any advice or pointers would be much appreciated :D

I'm still none the wiser! lol . When the light comes on there should be 3.5 ltrs left in the tank, but if yours is not working, I suspect its the sender unit or could be the gauge?

I replaced the bulb so its good so I suspect the sender or maybe a broken connection along the wires somewhere?

I stuck up a thread about testing the fuel light

Are you sure your using the right coding plug? If it's a retro fit then the comp may thinks it's in another car? Theres loads of differnt plugs available even down to different year 2.5's etc. I had the list of applictions somewhere. If you need it let me know.

I bought the correct 318is coding plug from the dealers for the back of the OBC, not sure if I needed to change the one in the instrument pack, but I doubt if I do.

looking for it now. Heres a basic list but the one I had was much more comprehensive. it listed fuel tank sizes etc.

Simultaneously press the 1000 and the 10 button to get the version number. You should get something like:

4 .6TYP

E30 318i 3-3 TYP
E30 325e ('84-87) 3-8 TYP
E30 325e ('88) 4-4 TYP
E30 325i ('87) 3-1.2 TYP
E30 325i ('88 on) 4-6 TYP
E30 M3 3-1.1 TYP
E28 528e ('85-87) 5-8 TYP
E28 528e ('88) 5-1.3 TYP
E28 535i 5-6 TYP
E28 M5 6-4 TYP
E24 635Csi/L6 ('85-87) 6-2 TYP
E24 635Csi ('88 on) 6-6 TYP
E24 M6 6-4 TYP
E23 735i/L7 ('85-87) 7-4 TYP

I know I've got it printed out somewhere as well. I've not got my car here at the mo so can't "play" with the buttons to get the chip type combinations right.

I'll look your car up on it and get back. Its a 318is yeah? what size tank and what year etc?

Leave it with me. what exactly is your car?
