I do lots of driving on the motorway, the main motorway I use is the M6 which has plenty of stop start action going on when the suit and tie brigade get on in their BMW diesels. This really pi55es me off, so the last thing I want is an auto box fu**ing about deciding which gear to select while the gap increases as the tw4t infront pulls away after just standing on the brake with two feet for no apparent reason :x

I have used my E34 touring auto once to go to manchester and back and I enjoyed it that much its now parked up infront of my house

Dont get me wrong, it was great to drive back from the depths of south wales on a saturday afternoon as the roads were clear with not one suit and tie dieseler in sight, had the seat tilted back and was lounging across the arm rest all the way home 8) 60 - 70mph saw me return 26 mpg, not bad for near on 2 ton! :D

The auto box will soon be ripped out and replaced with manual rightness, before or after the LPG gets fitted I dont know but its a definite!

Auto boxes, great for open road, shite for anything else :)

And BTW, auto kick down sounds pathetic and restrained :P

Auto kick down may sounds pathetic and restrained, but double kick down is a different thing, it kicks down and you think hey ho thats good........... then it kicks down again  its like droping a gear in a manual then the box thinking... woos and kicks down again.

If we meet let me take you out in mine. Its great for overtaking.

Oh and full trottle upshifts are good as well, not recomended in the wet or damp, can send the back sideways. Its a different a driving style, its not better or worse just diferent.

First car I ever 'drove' was a Triumph TR8 (the V8 version of the TR7) with autobox, and I accidentally reversed it into a wall - fortunately only slightly :o:

I've always mostly stuck with manuals but briefly owned a Ford Granada 2.0GLi Auto and have driven Merc autos - very relaxing, so I can see their appeal.

I know exactly what you mean Cotty, but the auto box just doesnt suit my style of driving, I just cant enjoy it unless im on an open road in a big car.

loadsa varying opinion on this one issue - i suppose i will have to see what i can do on the price of the car and if the autobox is all in working order -

Hood shouldnt be a problem i think....

so whats the deal with the bubble leather??....not available anymore or just stupidly expensive from stealers?

Hmm auto box's. They are shite arn't they. But when in a totally lazy frame of mind they are great.

If you enjoy driving I can't see how anyone would opt for an auto? As dan said they can never seem to make their mind up which gear they want in traffic. 2nd or first, ffs, just choose one and stick with it!! The autos I mainly drive are new merc c's or e's and VW jettas/passats.

Now the merc is fine for cruzing round looking like a 'wude boi whilst eying up all the fanny in town, it makes driving easy around town, but if you want to push on its just a pain in the arse. It never makes its mind up whether to change down or to stay in the gear you were in.

The Jetta/Passat tdi autos on the whole are very good. Stick them in 'sport' mode and the 6 speed auto is actually quite rewarding, lazy power and it holds gears rather than thinks "oo I should be econmical and stick it in 6th at 40mph  :? "

Summary: If there was a golf GT tdi manual and automatic or even an e30 man and auto, 100% of the time I would get in the manual.

Its all about the control. :)

Manual Msports are just very rare.
Most of the late run are also Auto.
I have both cabs an auto and the manual Msport below.
The auto drinks unleaded, get more from the tank with sensible manual Msport driving. winkeye

I loved my manual Golf GT TDI, sadly missed  company vectra is a dog.

iv just clocked this thread........ here is my 2p..
i have only driven one auto and that was a ford mondeo, the drive was quite relaxing although i did worry when it came to stopping.... wondering is it going to stay in gear when i stop and hit the bloke infront of me up the ass? dont worry, it was a few years ago now, it was my first time in an auto! what the @uck else was i gonna think?
now the manual  well what can i say, you the driver have total control. you change gear when YOU want to, if you want to feel the rev limiter then so be it. you dont get the same driver/car interaction when driving an auto, with a manual you are at one with the car.

pacerpete wrote:Correction , zoners with no money who think they are serious pilots dislike autos but proper buyers who are willing to pay lots of money for proper cars don't mind at all. I have sold a few big spec 325 auto tourings for good money, all to people who specifically wanted an auto, usually, 1, because they lived in a busy city, 2, they realise autos are usually owned and driven by a better class of person ( :) ) and not abused/thrashed in the way that manual 325s often are.
A nice 325 auto is a great driving car, and as Chris inferred suits the character of a cab.
Be very cautious and mean when buying a motorsport cab with a dodgy roof and damaged trim. To fix both of these problems contrary to what the seller may tell you WILL be expensive .
Pete totally nailed it there. When finished my car will have a big torquey engine and a relaxed ride and frankly, except for SMG/paddle autos (eg on much newer and sportier cars) an auto is bought by someone who IS NOT going to thrash the arse of the car at every oppurtunity. If i was buying a 2 door coupe i'd definately go for manual but on a cab its auto all the way.

I drive a cab (sorry taxi) for a living, doing around a 1000 miles a week, its an auto, and i wouldnt have it any other way. boring as f**k, yes but a real energy saver on the legs.
However my next e30 325 will be manual, more fun, more control and mpg. 8)

I've got an auto 325i, i love it on motorways and in town, but on country i miss the connection with the car you get in a manual. although the kickdown and switchable tranmission make up for this.

Simon13 is 110% right. Cabs are more cruizers and the auto box suits them, moreso than in any other car I've owned.

I'm a petrol head to the max but my cab is an auto. And as stated the 4 speed box is one of the best boxes ever built.

Getting back to the 1st question? I wouldn't walk away cos its an auto. I would, as pacerP suggests, be wary of taking an Msport cab on with trim issues. Good Bubble leather is a hard to find thing these days.

I know where there is a bubble interior available but it will probably be at least £600 and £500 minimum for the hood.

with that in ming you have to really want the car right?

bubble trim is NLA iirc. So a knackered interior will really foul you up!

Bloom miester are you telling me new 535d's and other diesels with auto boxes don't get thrashed? The amount i see with plumes of black smoke coming out the back tell me otherwise!
