Nitrous install

Looking for some advice and ideas as to where I should be mounting the switches for my nitrous system

I'll need to fit:

Activation switch (aero toggle type with red cover)
Purge pushbutton
Bottle heater toggle switch

There's also a possibility I might also fit a remote bottle opener in the future.

Bear in mind that I have a set of guages in the centre console in front of the ash-tray Audi style that will be staying put. I also want to retain functional air vents and OBC etc.

How about on the underdash panel to the right of the steering column. Nice and easy place to fit them aswell

You need easy access when you in third for activation. I put mine where the stero used to be. Purge button I would put near it. You could use the blank where the ac would go..!!!

No remote opener's.. Dangerous things.

The arming switch need's to be easy access from your gear stick,So the ash tray area is good. but not where you can knock it by accdent. Trigger switch should be on your tb not steering wheel.. Lose the ac it sap's power. as does pas.

I've got the 35/50/75 supplied with the kit but can get bigger up to 150.

What about using the the left and right horn buttons on a Tec 1 steering wheel for the activation switch?
Can use the bottom one then for the horn only.

You could use the Headlight adjuster switch for arming the system and the purge and bottle warming switches as in;
Make a new switch housing like the old shape to fit in nicely to the cut out in the trim panel,
Put the Arming aero toggle switch on one side and then two small push buttons beside it for the purge and bottle warmer.

Just an idea, that might keep it looking pretty factory

Not sure if you have a spare blank but i have moved my A/C / recirculate switch up above the stereo (next to demister switch) if you did that you could put the switch where the AC switch was.

mine is to the left side of steering wheel nice and easy to install and hide.

Having spent some time in the car today looking for an easily accessed but not 'in the way' location, I've decided to fit the arming and purge switches on the centre console where the Sports/Economy/Normal switch would be on a switchable auto (thanks Dips).

AC wont loose you power when its off

Arming switch down where the rubbish headlight adjuster switch (lets face it no ones works anyway) and have the "GO BABY GO" button mounted in the bump stop for the throttle. then all you need to do if you wanna go faster is floor it, hard. works well in autos. you get the kickdown and nitroous all in one violent hit.

Wiring is now in and the solenoids have been tested, fuel and nitrous are flowing

I need to fill up before taking the plunge and doing a road test

My wife would disagree mate, the destructions reckon on 4-6 hours to install. As I wanted a very neat install it's taken me about 18 hours all in.

Soldered joints/heatshrink, carpets out to fit the high pressure feed hose etc etc.

The only thing's I'm not happy with are :
The short length of the fuel feed hose,
The fact that using the kit supplied bottle brackets and pressure gauge adapter means that the hose would have a very sharp bend in it, the hose touches the carpet within 1" of leaving the bottle valve so I can't have the bottle in the correct 'valve outlet straight down' position.

Testing may be tonight after I've filled up with petrol, if I've got the balls

Right, been out for a test run

Filled up from empty with BP ultimate, 120.9 per litre

Found a straight quiet road and armed the system, purged for a few seconds then foot down from 2000rpm in 2nd, nitrous came in at 3000rpm as expected (rpm window controller) with a hefty 'shove' and revs climbed quite a lot faster than usual until the nitrous dropped out at 6000rpm, gearchange to 3rd and back on the gas with more shove again, up into 4th etc.

Turned round at the end of the road and ran up the gears as before, backed off at 5000rpm in 3rd with a very fookin loud 'crack' from the tailpipe followed by a group of 'yoof's' pointing excitedly

Seems to be working ok, however a little concerned about the crackling exhaust, don't want to burst an exhaust box. I will change the spark plugs tomorrow for the recommended colder versions and will try again.

I can see this getting very addictive

seems like you are getting some fuel pushed through to the exhaust, great for that wrc car look not so good for exhaust longevity or unsuspecting pensioners
what jets did you use(how big a shot), sounds like it just needs a bit of tweeking, or dont back off at 5000rpm!!!

hows the 2.8 coming on, did you get a crank, or have you put it on hold for a bit?

with the weather being so bad i've been working indoors on my 2.7, im gonna need a lighened flywheel

Hi Byron, I'm starting off small with the 35bhp jets. I reckon it's running way too rich (or getting fuel drop-out in the manifold) due to the bottle being cold.

The ideal bottle pressure is 950-1000psi but with the cold weather my bottle is currently sat at 700psi, hence running too rich.

I'll fit my colder plugs when I get home tonight and will try a slightly smaller fuel jet.

I've ordered a bottle heater from the states so when that's installed I'll revert back to the recommended jets.

The 2.8 is on hold again, should have a crank coming from Quarry motors then I'll be back on the case
