Ok guys, my brother is looking for a car, he's 18, and has passed his test for about 3 months, i think. He wants something fast, but he isnt made of money, I think he wants to spend about 1500-2000 on the car, but then about a max of 2500 on insurance..
Whats the fastest he can go on that price?

Your brother is gona pay over £1000 for a 1litre fiesta given his circumstances.
Why doesn't he buy a small cheap car and build up some no claims!?

Well I paid around £800 for a 1.5 Seat Ibiza, so you can get something nippy.. but to be willing to pay £2500 on the insurance is insane!
You're either going to pay through the teeth for something fast on insurance or no one will touch you.

The irony of stating "isn't made of money" but is willing to spend 2.5K on insurance.Hakkera wrote:Ok guys, my brother is looking for a car, he's 18, and has passed his test for about 3 months, i think. Your brother should get a small engined car that is reasonable to insure, earn some no claims and put the 2.5K towards buying a decent motor in a couple of years. However, if he's happy to p!ss money up a wall...

Fast car and young driver doesn't go.
316/318i -Mine's £800 at 17 under my Dad's name. So could well be cheaper.
Maybe he could insure a 325i with that.

Even trying to insure a 325 being 18, male, no no claims, 3 months experience.. He's either going to have to pay over 2500 or no one will touch him.

Yeah he was bitching about that 325s are 3000+ on insurance, even he can even get bloody insurance. This stuff is really tiring me out with him.. We need to get that the idea he needs to wait a few years into his head. The only way I think I an do that atm is with a mallet. But anyhow, at the moment, im slowly convincing him that something like a Mini can be quick and nippy...

gota walk before you run fella , i know he wants a fast car but what he wants and needs are 2 different things , if he gets something quick now and was to stuff it up a tree/another car then hes not going to get insured on anything else for some time
better to start small and progress from there , get him a 1.1 pug 106 , pretty nippy for a go kart , 1.4 xsi is a good car without going silly aswell , none of them rust and theres loads about
just my 2p worth

yes it was 3 years ago but as james318i says if it is his first car then he would be better of with a 316.
I know if I had anything more pokey than my 1.3 corolla there is a good chance i would now be dead.

18 year old in a fast car with 3 months experiance = accident
let him get somthing fast and pay 2500 for insurance, it will be a hard way to learn a lesson.

My first car was a ford capri 2.0S bought the cxar for £250 (it was a rust bucket with no brakes etc) insurance cost me £1500 which is not bads at all for a 17 year old i was looking at overe a grand on a 1.1 fiesta ...
i had GREAT fun with tht car and just because i was young with a "relatively" fast rwd car doesnt mean i was an accident waiting to happen i never had an accident in it apart from someone driving into it while it was parked and someone hitting the back at a roundabout ... then i put a 2.0 pinto in it with a lightened and balanced bottom end and a realy light flywheel a ported and polished head with a mental cam and vernier pulley and a 38dgas carb off a 3.0 capri got it jetted and set uip and it was a quick car then ! would rev uip really freely and it was stripped out completely 140bhp in a car tht has no weight over the rear wheels ..... if u got in it like this
you would come out like this
or

Why does he want a fast car? planning on doing a bank job??
Peoples perceptions of what they want and what they need are usually not the same.
Sure when we were all 17 we want the fastest thing on 2 / 4 wheels to impress the mates etc, it usually ends in tears...
I proudly had my first accident 3 or 4 days after getting my first car
(MkII Escort 1.3!!!) bumped someone at a roundabout, obviously it wasn't my fault that it was wet and i was going too fast, and the person in front didn't get out of the way quick enough...
Buying a £1500 car and spending £2500 on insurance is pure bloody madness, but you can't expect some 17 year olds to understand that.
It's his money, sounds like he is going to take the gamble of smashing up a semi decent motor! Just hope to God he doesn't hurt someone in the process,
I feel better after getting that off my chest!
If I were you, i wouldn't get a lift in your brothers car for the first week or two
Thinking about it i paid £1000 for my first car (The MkII Escort) back in 1988, £1500 on your first car these days doesn't sound much in comparison! although i believe my insurance then TPFT was about £300.

I was the same when I was younger. I payed nearly £2000 for 6months insurance on a '91 jap import crx sir. About a month later I wrote it off and had to get a 1.4 astra merit
So my advice is you may as well go for a slow car first as if you get a fast car you'll write it off and end up with a piece of shite anyhow
lol

I had trick minis until I was about 21.
They are expensive now however, but the the most i paid for insurance was 700 odd for a year, third party.
Minis are great for learning how to drive properly too, with no power but much handling, you shouldnt get in too much trouble.
But surely a 316 E30 wont break the bank for insurance?
They are Slooooooow though : )

Why doesnt he go for a late 316i with an M40?
I had one and had plenty of fun with it, and frankly it does 120mph on the clock to who is enough to get pulled over by the Police and give him a huge fine and some time as a pedistirant....
Give me a good 316i and I will drive faster around the Ring than some few ppl in here around the Ring in Germany because it learn me to handle an E30 in the corners. Its what skills you have in your brain who prove how fast you can drive and not what engine is front of the firewall
Just my two cents!

I would try stuff like the old suzuki swit gti, fiat uno's can be quick but shit, 106 quicksilvers are alright and handle well
or get a 316i M40 and learn to drive a real car
