ive hit a wall.....heeeeeeeelp

no i havent spanked the ride...

just hit a problem with the project car....

so i got the e34 m5 engine in and modified the body with a hammer and bolted the box up to it,,,, now i was under the impression that i could use an e30 m3 gbox xmember and mounts for the box.... however these will not work.

on looking at some pics of similar conversions on e30.de, it appears that many people doing this have used e30 m3 dogleg boxes.....???? on these the mounting points on the bos are urther back.....which makes sense as the e30 m3 xmember would then fit onto these. The m5 gearbox however only has mounting holes right at the back much like an e30 325i box.

has anyone got any ideas how i can stillll use the e34 m5 box as im not gonna go spending more money (which i dont have) on a e30 m3 box.

I see this is very hard to understand, so ill get pics up tmro

use the e30 m20 box crossmember

that's what i'm using, mates perfectly with e34 535i box anyway which has the mounts right at the back.

cheers toby ill give it a look...

problem is cos im using engine position 3, the holes are quite far back and i think there are no rails at the correct point on the chassis where the crossmember would mount, if u see what i mean....

cant you get your existing crossmember modified, had to modify mine.
if you cant, and you can remember what you want bring it down here next time your about and i'll weld it up for you.

If the crossmember comes too far back for the rails, couldn't you just bolt it to the floor instead with a couple of large load spreading washers?

yeh.... i was gonna do that.... but what im gonna do is just use an m20 xmember and mounts and bolt a plate to the existing rail so as to extend it backwards, then bolt the xmember to this, like so.....

on another note.....i was able to hit the shell into submission in most areas quite easily

Very neat work mate, but I'm afraid with your drifting tendancies you're going to get a lot of bending force in this area

I knew a guy who put a big block ford V8 in a capri and made his gearbox mount like this .......... I think it lasted 5000 miles before it broke. If I was you I'd go for the belt and braces, bolt through the floor where the bolts ran through the original mount as well.

that isnt mine by the way its someone elses in germany
i see what u mean about the twisting force there, however the e30 m3 uses an ally xmember whish is arranged in a similar way....... so it cant be that bad especially if i use like a 10mm plate with another piece et 90deg to add strength

oh i just understood what u meant yeh ill prob do that, ill also do the same as that guy but extend the 'braces' back and bolt them to the floor further back also

I mean bolt through where the yellow arrow is, with some big washers.
making the extensions L sectioned too is a good idea. Good luck I hope you're through the wall

i just went and checked out the car and i have realised that there are 2 threaded holes either side of the tunnel on the floorpan that look VERY strong....so what im gonna do its make a thick plate up for each side and secure it to the rails as shown in the above pic and also behind to these threaded holes i have discovered i wont be drilling into the floor.
will get picsup later to show u what i mean

The standard arrangement into those slots doesn't look all that strong to me.
