Anyone know from what year to what year the appropriate Golf was produced?
Was in my favourite scrappy yesterday, and couldn't decide whether or not I was looking at the right model.

Hi mate, I just need the loom, but may be getting one on monday (got to see if it is a vanos loom or not) May well need the ECU as well mate.
Is it worth poping down to see them? I have next week off of work
Does your mate still have the E36 325i manual prop?
Having major headaches getting my M3 one
Did you have to modify the pin hole in the Mk2 servo mate?

Will hunt for one,thanks.Nearly bought a 944 one !

The left hand one is the late mk2/16valve the right hand one is the early/ smaller engined cars.
Spoke to my mate and he recons that the smaller servo doesn't have enough reserve capacity for hard driving.

What diameters are the servos in the photo?
good question!
The bigger of the 2 is about an inch or so smaller than the E30 in diameter.
The smaller of the 2 golf ones is tiny!
will find out for sure when I am there next week

thats what i've got in mine and works fine. i've driven it pretty much as hard as i ever have(flat outSure you don't want a 1.3 one!
the mk 2 golf is 82-91. think mine came from a e plate. for some reason they all are rusty but only on the outside. the fit is spot on i dont think you can go much bigger. i think wills might be 924 not 944 as his looks smooth on the outside. if you check the pic earlier on here you will see the 944 one looks pressed on the outside.
andy if you have nxt week off pop down and check it out and have a go in it. see what you think. i'm off tuesday and wednesday. always up for meeting fellow e30 nuttas. my number is 07977 767049. just give me a bit of warning and all should be good

Think there were several of the bigger Golf servo in the scrappy now I've seen the picture and know the year range. Certainly they had that blue label on them.
Started to piddle down with rain and I lost interest. Also there were no other parts in the yard that I was interested in, and the owners pricing structure seems to be something like Ԛ£10 for one item, Ԛ£15 for two, and a van load for about Ԛ£40 , so I'll wait till next time when hopefully there be a few more BMs in.

they've all got the blue label on. thats the vag/ate sticker.
i think it's only the 16v which is bigger. just go for any non gti servo and all should be good. i like the pricing scheme for your breakers brian. if he gets any e28 525e's or 528's with a manual dogleg box can u grab me the diff. i'd double your money at that price

525e diff is one of the things on my list.
I bought one on my last visit for my M50 - also got a complete mint grey touring interior, some window motors, wiper motors, a 5 series air filter box, a loads of other small bits - Ԛ£40 the lot
Only problem is the yard is 150 miles away.

my local yard i used to work at ( good for e30 fuel economy) and have fully converted the beys to bm's so they often have a few in stock. sometimes i think i've nearly got enough e30 bits to start my own yard.
i keep getting offered cars if i take them away. joys of driving a spec lift.
i've got a b plate 323 atm if anyone wants it. i only want the green heated rear window switch.

Went to Silverstone for the F1 test session on Thursday, back to my sister's to make my new Ԛ£130 touring roadworthy, scrapyard on Friday and then home.
Sister was away in France, so she must realise it wasn't to visit her.

I have my e34 sump now but it must have come from a 520 as there was no oil level sensor just a blanking plate.I have fitted the oil level sensor from the S50 sump and it bolts up the same and looks ok.
When i checked the ETK it gives a different part number for the e36 and e34 level sensor so do you think it will still function correctly ???
What have all you m50 S50 users used ? the E36 sender or the e34 sender ?
cheers

I don't think you will be able to use the S50 level sender, as it works in a totally different way to the E30/E34 (not sure the non M3 Evo E36 had a level sender - can't see it in the ETK). Saying that, I can't see an M50 engined E34 that doesn't have one either.
The E30/E34 sender is a basic float type sensor with a couple of switch contacts that open/close depending on the oil level. This feeds directly to the E30 check control computer.
The S50 uses a thermal level sender that sends it's signal to the ECU, and then it gets sent to the E36 OBC/Dash (or wherever it's displayed on the E36). I don't think this signal is going to work with the E30 electronics.
I used the E34 sender that came with my E34 sump, and it works fine.
Cheers,
Ian.

Ian,
the sump is from a 520,and some must have been fitted with no level sensor. It shows up on the etk and shows the blank.
So i need a e34 sender then ? bugger bugger bugger.
Also the oil pump i have i cant decifer or find it on the etk.
It has a part number of: 1 730 070. It is the only number on the pump and looks to be incomplete to me.The pump also is stamped up 92 for the year.

M50 E34 level sensor works perfectly with E30 check control.
M50 blue/yellow to E30 blue
M50 blue/white to E30 green/yellow.

I have checked the ETK, and the part number you listed above is not listed for any model. This is not that unusual though. I have had a number of genuine BMW parts that have a part number not in the ETK.
The pump listed for the E34 M50 520i, is used on all the E34 M50 range, so is common across all engine sizes etc. Assuming the pump came from the same engine that donated it's sump, then it should be fine.
Cheers,
Ian.

Thats what i got too,not listed. The pump looks right,I will post a pic later. The only difference i noticed is that the sproket is flat and the s50 one is dished,i guess the s50 one needs fitting to this pump.
I will remove the S50 oil level sender. Can you tell me the price of a new sender from the stealer as my etk doesnt have prices on it.
cheers m8

I used the S50 sprocket on my conversion.
New sender from BMW is going to be around Ԛ£98, so you may want to ring the scrappies.

Cheers Ian,i think i will try where i got the sump from.
I tried FAB but they didn't have a sump so i treid quarry, and they supplied me with sump, pump and dipstick and dipstick tube for Ԛ£70 to my door which i think was a good price.I suppose there is no reason why i can't fit the sump and pump now though, then replace the oil level sender when i get it.
Anyone got one though before i ring around ?

Sorry to butt in on this thread guys, but I'm getting the bits & pieces together to fit an M50 into my Cab and I've heard some conflicting advice on the transmission set-ups. I could really do with some advice before my brain explodes
& I end up spending Ԛ£130 on a diff I don't need.
Car is an 89' 320i Cab. Engine to go in is a 91' E34 525i.
Options:
1. E34 525 flywheel - E30 320 g/box - std 4.1:1 diff.
2. E30 320 flywheel - E30 320 g/box - std 4.1:1 diff.
3. E34 525 flywheel - E30 320 g/box - E30 325 3.64:1 diff.
4. E30 320 flywheel - E30 320 g/box - E30 325 3.64:1 diff.
5. E34 525 flywheel - E30 320 g/box - E28 M535 diff.
6. E30 320 flywheel - E30 320 g/box - E28 M535 diff.
7. E34 525 flywheel - E36 (?) box - E30 325 3.64:1 diff.
8. E30 320 flywheel - E36 (?) box - E30 325 3.64:1 diff.
9. E34 525 flywheel - E36 (?) box - E28 M535 diff.
10. E30 320 flywheel - E36 (?) box - E28 M535 diff.
If I understand it right (unlikely
), options 4, 6 & 10 should be the ones to look at, but I stand ready to be flamed on that because there is bound to be a combination I've missed.
Can anyone help?
Iain

I've been told the E28 has a big and small case dif,the small one fit's the E30 if you change the out put hubs and rear cover.
The big case is supposed to foul the subframe i think ?
I'm not sure which E28 models were fitted with which sized dif but i'd guess that the M30 powered ones will be the big case dif ?
Heres a handy gearing calculator
http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/revs.html
Do you know the gear box ratios ? I can post them up if you want ?

Thanks for the quick response Andy.
The only ratios I know for certain are the E30 g/box's. Apparently, the 320 is closer to the Sport ratios than the 325 which should in theory make it preferable.
It's which combination to use that's doing my head in because I'm getting the engine without a box.
I know that the std 4.1:1 diff will be next to useless but do I get an E30 325 or an M535? I've just found an M535 one for Ԛ£130, but I've no idea yet as to which year it is or what ratios it has.
And what's this about 5 or 7 bolt diff covers? I've just been out to look at mine & I can see 6!!! (one each top & bottom & two either side)
My brain hurts

the m535i one won't go on unless you get custom driveshafts and custom rear diff cover made up.
as far as i know (if i remember what masterbates said correctly!) all e28s had the e30's large case diff, these will go on an e30 if you change over the rear cover and maybe output cup for e30 parts.
BUT the m535/535 used an even bigger diff from the 7 series which won't go on (can't install e30 drive cupsand there's no bolt-on rear cover to suit the e30 mount. ive tried!)
so unless you can find an lsd from a 528i or something, e28 is not much use.

Bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger.
Guess I'll have to phone the guy & tell him it's no good to me.
So come on guys, what would be the best combo out of my selection (or are there others that you can think of without it getting too silly).

i'd sort out which box you want to use first then worry about a diff after that. can't help you on the gearbox front, my car is all 535i running gear so different
however... assuming you use an e30 325 or 325 sport box, a 3.91 e30 diff will give you something like 140-145mph. a 3.64 is better bet. both available as lsd which will be more fun!
