I've been running for months... no Years, with a Strong exhaust smell outside the car. I have no leaks in the exhaust.

The fuel economy is CR@P

It recently passed it's MOT emissions test

Im going to go check the plugs now.

If they turn out to be BLACK, how do i adjust the mixture.

(M40 318i)

Or are there any places in the NE that will do it for me? Prices?

The mixture is set by the map in the ECU, and there can't be a lot wrong if it passes it's emissions test.
The only way you can change the mixture is by playing with the fuel pressure, by fooling the ECU into thinking the engine's getting more or less air than it is, or hotter or colder air than it is, or by fooling the ECU into thinking the engine's hotter or colder than it is.
THoroughly test or replace the blue engine temp. sensor. (hidden in the side of the engine under the inlet manifold)

I know, I know... BURN the Haynes book.

But the Bentley doesn't cover the M40 at all, and i don't know of any others.

I came across a very good looking manual for E30s in France last year. Loads of pictures, exploded diagrams and data. All in French of course, so it would help if you can speak the language, but all the diagrams and tech data are universal of course.
Can't remember what it was called, but I saw them in several branches of Auchan, IIRC>
