at end of rebuild, started 6 months ago! I have wire with spade conection which my dad marked "crank sensor?" but we can't find where it goes onto. Interestingly it did run last week with the chunky crank position sensor not in place.

where does mystery wire go?

why did it run without the crank position sensor and the mystery wire not attatched and it won't today?

the plug for the wire should be under the inlet manifold. there are two plugs there 1 is for the pulse sensor on the ht leads

What age is the engine? early engines have the crank sensor at the gearbox, later engine have the sensor on the front of the engine.

spade connector?

Sounds like a bodge to me... the cps has the standard loom plug on the end, not a spade connector..

there doesn't seem to be a pulse sensor on the HT leads (i've looked on my 320 and there is).

There is no buzzing sound from the engine bay when the key is turned to the on position.

What is the relevance of this?

Tried a different coil and coil to distributer lead. No go.

There isn't a noise form the idle control valve area when the ignition is on (and there is on Goosie's car).

After the engine ran last week we left the battery conected and it went flat. I wondered if we might have fried the ECU? I'm about to buy a new ECU.

The car has a BMW immobiliser (the one with a magnetic key hole in the door). This allowed the car to start after the batterey had been disconected and re-connected so I'm assuming it won't be stopping it now. I hope it hasn't armed itself - I don't have the key.

Check to see if there's power going to the ICV.

the windscreens leak a lil bit at the bottom and have a habbit of making the ecu damp
