Hi guys, the problem I have is that thread for the temp sender is defferent to the one I have already in my head (M52 engine using M50 temp senders) Does anyone know if it is possible to buy something with the right thread to screw into the head and then screw the new temp sender into this?

Any help or ideas much appriceated as always

Speak to Motorsport Engineering (Bedford) Ltd. Tel:- 01234 262282. If you specify the thread sizes they should b able to sort you out. They did 2 tee pieces for me so that I could fit oil pressure guage sender & still keep oil pressure switch facility for Ԛ£4 each + postage.

Not sure on the thread thing but when i put my M30 in the E30 the M30 temp sender wasn't compatable with the E30 clocks,it wouldn't go any higher than the top of the blue.I had to use an M20 sender that had a one pin connector rather than the two pin M30 sender.

HTH you in some way :squint: :)

Cheers mate! Will call them in the morning :)

Was the temp sender a direct swap mate? (same thread?)

Looking at them I think both the M20 and the M50 brown ones are different to the blue ones (thread wise)

You use the E30 one terminal sender in a M50 conversion as well.
Andy, are you saying the M52 temp sender is a different thread from the M50? I've just bought a M52, so I shall be needing to know about these kind of things.

Hi Brian, I have bought 2 new M50 temp senders (Blue motronic/black temp gauge)

Below is the setup on a standard M52:

Image

On the left (front of the engine) is the 4 pin plug (This is the 2 temp senders in one unit) to the right is the water outlet for the throttle block. I have removed this water outlet and put the blue M50 sender in this hole. Perfect. The problem is the new black M50 sender that has a different thread, to either of the ones in the block.

The round bit in the middle used to have a plug in it on the 1997 engines, but later had this not fitted. This can be tapped but want to use it as a very last resort

Below is the new black sender (2 pin, with the numbers
3.05
805/34/1
1710535 on it)

I think we tried an M20 brown one and it has the same thread as the black M50 sender

If I have missed anything just let me know and I will fill in what I can.

you may be able to stay with the 4 pin sender with the OBDII managment but not tested this option fully yet. I think Ian is running seperate senders in his 332i

It'll be a while before I get to doing anything with this engine, although I do have a mint silver touring shell sitting around in need of an engine. I haven't even collected the engine yet. Just called in to see it on my way somewhere else yesterday, and took the ECUs with me, before they went walkies. ( Lying loose on top the engine).
Thank's for the information though. I'm sure I'll need a lot more yet, since I didn't get to remove the enginr from the car myself.

Okay, I have an idea!

The old one is useless, right?

Cut the old one in half, (to the length of the shaft of the new one)
Drill out the middle to a size slightly smaller than the new shaft, (interference fit)
Press the new sensor into the hole.

So it looks a little like THIS...

I did this on a Datsun Sunny temp senor with excellent results.

You may want to put some thermal transfer paste round the shaft (in the hole)

other than that. it should work fine.

.... OMG .... I just read that... sounds a bit. :gay:
