Hi

I noticed a wiff of petrol recently. I had it on a hard surface this evening and found the petrol leak it appears to be coming from the body of the fuel pump?

I have printed off the schematic from realoem and there appears to be a rubber ring in the middle, could this be the problem or is it better to get a new pump? Obivously a ring is cheaper? the petrol is coming from the rear most surface.

Any thoughts/previous experiences would be appreciated...looking at the schematic again i reckon that the rubber ring is just a part of the clamp?

cheers

323i 1985, the pump is in front of near side rear wheel. will check the rear most hose again. as it has smelt even after not using it so perhaps it is the hose which seeps under gravity pressure then pisses when petrol is been drawn! I am going to take the rear wheel off for better vision.

cheers

Just wiped the wheel off, not that helpful...But i could get a lamp in there to get more light on the subject.

It does appear to becoming from the back of the pump itself rather than the rear most hose leaking!

I'll try tightening all jubilee clips tomorrow am.

Far more likely to be a split fuel hose or a problem with a jubilee clip than the pump itself. If the rubber fuel hoses are original, they are long past their sell by date.
If you replace the pump, you would be better off replacing the in-tank transfer pump with the more modern high pressure pump and bypassing the wheel arch pump with a piece of pipe.

I have an 86 325i that had a similar problem. Car wasn't starting properly either. Fuel was coming from what seemed to be the rear of the pump but was actually coming out from around the electrical contacts. Thought it was better just to replace the whole thing. Ԛ£30 and half an hour was the cost !!

Yes mate .... it was a bosch. Job was fairly easy but I had it up on a proper garage ramp which made it easier. Just need to stick a cork or something in the fuel pipe quick cos I got soaked !!
Think the original was a bosch as they were exactly the same.

I have just changed the piece of fuel hose and it still leaks so i guess the fuel pump is to blame.
