One major problem is the diff mount failing. Check where the rear diff bush bolts to the body, then look very carefully at the top of this bracket where it meets the floor, often rips/splits.

The E36 coupes used to pull out from the floor the 4 rear axle mounting points. The ZM Coupe destroys the rear diff mount

I had a 98 S reg - 40ishK miles, FBMWSH, Cosmos black with Imola leather. Stunning car. Fast beyond belief.
Car went into the main dealer for a service, 100miles later it threw a rod through the block on the M6!
Thankfully, despite the car being out of warranty, BMW contributed a new short engine. I contributed the cost of the labour in fitting it. It was about a grand! I never got to the bottom of why the thing decided to sh1t itself, but BMW's customer service is second to none!
Mine had bills for the dash coming out - I think problems wit the A/c are common.
And if anyone's on the hunt for a diff, it's the one out of the S54 engined car you want (as do I)!

You want the very last ones with the 'even more' upgraded engine. Only a few extra HP but better mechanically
