Can a few Nm or so make a difference to the crank bolt?

Need technical Q/A then you're in the right place

After searching for a torque multiplier to tighten the UBER tight front pulley bolt, I gave up and resorted to maths instead.

Now I weigh about 10.5 stone and have a 2ft breaker bar so my full weight hanging on the end of that should be about 298lbft which according to the google calculator equates to 404.033749 newton meters.

Haynes says that it should be 410Nm though. Does anyone reckon it'll make much difference?

right here is the score. 1 kilo 1 m from the centre of the bolt is equal to 10nm. would not be worried about what you are missing if your calculations are correct. how do you propose to stop the engine turning? putting it in 5th with the handbrake pulled hard may wotk but you will loose torque through that method (twisting of drive shaft) thus loosing even more thightening. also gearbox could get damaged. personally with that torque i'd just borrow an air gun add locktight and rattle that sucker in til it won't turn no more. trust me you will not ring it, and it won't come loose

Jolly good. We reckoned dad was too heavy

The engine's on a stand in the kitchen with the sump off for modification at the mo so I stopped the crank from turning by placing a 10" length of aluminium rod in the crank case. Seemed to work a treat :)

Cheers!
