i know theres a million &one timing belt threads already, but its still an area that i dont like messing with, on m20....how do you make sure you dont overtighten the belt...? i mean is that what the tensioner does, make sure its not over tightened?

blah im going to attempt this tomorow a bit of a last minute thing considering i cant afford to cock it up and i need the car first thing saturday. :?

any help is of course much appreciated

belt should not be able to be twisted more than 90 degrees.. so something less than that without it be difficult to twist at all is about right. dont think there is any hard n fast rule

I fitted a new one to my M20 yesterday evening.

The leaflet that came with the belt said fit the belt with the timing marks aligned and the tensioner fully retracted. Then slacken off the two tensioner bolts so the spring pings some tension into the belt. Next, rotate the engine one or two turns anticlockwise using the CAM PULLEY so that the tensioner side goes a little slack.

Tighten the tensioner bolts, turn the engine clockwise twice from the crank end and check that the timing marks still align.

Mine can't quite be twisted through 90degrees with quite a lot of force so I'm relatively happy that it's correct :)

Know what you mean though, I HATE timing belts!

need car first thing saturday morning, drift practice.....i have the choice of attempting the belt today and possibly fudging it up and not even making it to the drift day... or just running the risk of not changing it and hoping lots of revs and engine abuse wont explode my engine to pieces....its all too nerve wracking for me. i know i have shit luck so something bad will happen no matter which option i choose.
