going with a friend tomorrow to look at a e28 525 with intentions of building a 2.7/2.8 using the block... considering its an eta

can anyone tell me what to look for when viewing to ensure that its the piece of metal were after, i.e. how do you tell an ETA engine from another??

thanks

The onley E28's that came with the M20 were the 520i and 525e.So if it has an E30(525i or 528i) it is the wrong lump! The block's casting mark should read '84' if it is a 525e. All eta's sold in the UK had the 4 speed EH gearbox.

thanks for the help guys, so labeled 525e is a good start, checking for a 4 speed box, and an 84 on the casting on the block aswell seeing that we find it lol

tell me, does the fact that the engine is either a 525i or 525e count when its the eta block were really after?? did the 525i come with an eta block, just the head is different?

any other tips?

i see alot of people talking about ETA on here... how did you guys know?

E28 525i has the 'big six' m30 engine, which looks totally different to any variant of the m20 (little six) I might be wrong, but I think the head will have eta cast into it on the exhaust side near the front of the head. Also, if it's drivable, you will be able to identify it by it's low rev limit.

Engine type number is on a machined flat area near the RH engine mount. I would expect it to start with 27.

Look on the chassis plate on the inner wing for '525e'. Y, A and B plate cars have the early 11:1 compression engine. C, D and E's have the 10.2:1 CR motor.
