I don't really want to admit to this in public but I broke the ECU on my friends 320i last night by shorting out the wrong pins to reset the service lights.... :hammer: :bolt:

Fortunately I had a spare ECU kicking about but it was from a 325i.

The car runs, but is any one aware of any problems that could be caused running the car like this untill I can source another ECU?

By the way, I tried to swap the 320 chip into the good ECU but the chip appears to be knackered too!

Many thanks, and yes I know I'm stupid.

I ran my 2.0 touring with a 2.5 ECU for a few months, probably overfuelled a bit, but it ran better than before!

Thanks dave,

I was pretty certain it would be alright, always worth getting a second opinion though.

I'm now thinking about dropping a 320 'Zone Chip' into the 325 ECU.....

Does anyone know anything about the differences between the ECU's and whether this would be just as good as using a proper 320i ECU....?

The ECU that was in the 320 originally was a '381' whereas the 325 one i swapped it with is a '380'.

all the post facelift ECUs are the same apart from the chip on the PCB dudes.

318iS is the exception to the rule though OK !!

you can use M20/M40 ECUs from an e34 if anyone ever get stuck.
