Got pulled the other night for my exhaust. The bobby took one look at it, pointed at the massive twin dtm tailpipes and asked me the retorical question - "is that a standard BMW exhaust stystem".I answered no it's a custom built Powerflow full stainless one why?He then got in my car and revved it!How dare he!!he then told me it was illegal and that any exhaust stytem that produces more sound than a standard one is illegal!!!!
He then also found out it was blowing (getting that fixed on saturday).he was going to give me the fine for the exhaust stytem anyway but gave me the fine for the blowing.Fair enough. He said if I didnt do something about it and he caught me with it again then he would confiscate my car for testing!!Now my exhaust does have a note to it but it aint rediculously loud.Is this all a heap of gobsh*te or is he right. If so then Iv just wasted Ԛ£320 on the exhaust!!I asked powerflow to make it legal. The system has same number of standard boxes and WILL pass an mot. What can I do.It is not above the legal decible limit as my mates is luder and his is below the limit.Very very annoyed!!It's ridiculous!!

Fcuking police can be twats, and then the courts back them up even when they're blatantly wrong - perfect example e marked exhaust.
Bloody nanny state
Oh and to pass the Single Vehicle Approval Sechem an exhaust must be no louder than 101 dB.

What a crock of horse sh*t
Police are a load of w*nkers now'adays tbh. I doubt many know much about cars, and the slightiest bit of knowledge (or at least basics that they have to know) they exagerate and talk down to you about

you'd think haveing a noisy exhaust would be a good thing so all the little children could get out the way nice and early.
Take it back to powerflow and say
"listen up sucka's this was meant to be legal volume level, pay me fine, and sort the volume out"

Interesting one, did he measure the SPL output? If not then he has no evidence to say it was louder, he might have just had his ears syringed or something. If a car will pass MOT afaik it is road legal, hence the reason for the test...hammoj28 wrote:I asked powerflow to make it legal. The system has same number of standard boxes and WILL pass an mot. What can I do.It is not above the legal decible limit as my mates is luder and his is below the limit.Very very annoyed!!It's ridiculous!!![]()
Thats probably why he fined you for it blowing rather than the noise output.
However....
From the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986
Every vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall be fitted with an exhaust system including a silencer suitable and sufficient for reducing as far as may be reasonable the noise caused by the escape of exhaust gases from the engine.
No person shall use, cause or permit to be used, a vehicle on a road if exhaust gases from the engine escapes into the atmosphere without first passing through the silencer, etc.
The silencer etc. shall at all times when the vehicle is used on a road be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not have been altered in any way which makes the noise of escaping gases greater.
Damn grey area...

no way, now that copper was most definately a w4nker..
i had quite a loud thing on my vw, didn't get pulled for it once..
but it gave me headaches on the motorway so i had another silencer added, ask the copper next time .. excuse me officer but were u born a w4nker or did u take training?

No idea how the guy at powerflow did it.Im going to get them, to give me a certificate saying it's legal if i can.The Bobby has a big problem and he is going to get a company called Vosa up to both local towns Huntly and keith. There are two places where my mates and people with cars park in each he is going to block them in and then test every exhaust!!My mate has an mi16 pug 205 and it is soooooo loud. Will probably blow the machine up!!
Dont get me wrong some bobbies are great and will tell you to go home and fix it but others are a bunch of wan**rs!!He said he had a personal interest in performance exhaust and reckoned he could get rid of them.
Also classsed me as a boyracer and said he had seen me doing at least 70mph through keith which is utter crap!!!Im not just saying this but I drive slowly in towns!!If im going to drive fast it will be on a big road.
He also asked me if i was going to get the blowing fixed and I said "of course when the system has full pressure you get a much better rip from the tailpipe!!"He didnt like that!!What an idiot.
There are people being killed, raped, mugged, things are being vandalised and all sorts of other crimes.Yet hes more worried about the sound that comes from my exhaust!!GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!

Can they fine you on the spot for a blowing exhaust?hammoj28 wrote:but gave me the fine for the blowing.
I only ask cause 3 or 4 years ago I got stopped in my Cav SRi cause the exhaust was loud. It was actually a hole in the backbox but it did make it loud.
Anyway, I was given 7 days to get it repaired, checked by an MOT station who then stamped the form I was given by the copper with their MOT stamp and had to return the form to the police station along with my insurance etc etc.
I do remember something in the papers a couple of years back about aftermarket exhausts that are louder than the original system are illegal, but thought it was crap.

Whjatever the law is it's a ridiculously picky stupid thing to do!!
That thing about getting a better rip is actually true aswell!!A couple of bobbies pulled me in my mini one night with the big bore system blowing real bad. They asked me where I was going and I said home to fix it.The bobby just said alright on you go mate. Were not going to fine you but watch yourself because others probably will!!Very nice of them!!Anyway I fixed it and it was well louder!!Those were the days!!(actually last year

i started to get worried cuase it seemed loud to me, but the turned off further down the road.
Guess its just wrong place, wrong cop.

The w*anker had the cheek to go to your car and rev your engine.
Considering it was cold at the time (and it was) I think you should complain how he did permanent engine damage by revving it.
You might think I'm not serious but anyone who revs my car over 2,500rpm when it's cold will get a smack in the mouth, and I'm not a violent person

Does the inside of a car constitute as private property? If so he was trespassing!
Perhaps there is somebody in the Police/Citizens advice that you could call for a clarification on exhausts, perhaps Traffic Branch themselves might be able to give you an answer on this, don't ring the station where the copper is from though lol

Dunno about modifing standard cars but on kit cars the legal limit is 101db - this is tested when you get it SVA'ed. The mic is placed at floor level 1 meter from the exhaust. The test is done at full power (which wont be on the rev limiter)
