Decided yesterday that it was time to take the stripes off, and as many of you predicted I ran into problems with the first try on the bonnet....this happened:

respray?

Does this spell a respray or is it just lacquer? polish? I think im being hopeful!

looks like laquer to me. i dont know if it can be rubbed down and relaquered or if its a complete respray. try rubbing it down with wet and dry to lose the sharp edges and giving it a spray of laquer from a can.youve nothing to lose .

Has the lacquer actually come off or is glue left behind from the stipes ?

I had glue left on after taking off my "Le Mans" stripes, had to use white spirit to get rid !

the old paint is high, the new marks are low, so I have definitely taken something off. There was shadowing left on the vinyl when i took it off so its definitely at least the lacquer thats been taken off. Really pissed off cos i took ages over this with a hair dryer etc, went really well then went all of a sudden and took a whole strip off.

I was just thinking the same - looks just like adhesive residue with the edge being so clean.

the highlight is on the wrong edge to be anything ontop of the paint, its definatly the laquer that has come off.

Looks like a trip to the paint shop will be required in some form

thanks for the opinions guys, does anyone know how likely it is that the bonnet can be stripped of its lacquer and re-lacquered? and how much it's likely to cost!

Pop to halfords and pick up a bottle of Autoglym intensive tar remover, Give the areas a good wipe down with this to double check it is not the adhesive.

Sometimes the stripes/graphics collect a ridge of dirt or grime along the edge. When the graphic is removed it can feel like the paint is lower.

With it being so cold lately I'd be surprised if the adhesive will come off with the vinyl.

All in my opinion of course, I will probably be wrong :D

Do you know if the car was painted after it left the factory? If so, then the chances are it's laquer. Trying to blend in new clearcoat is a nightmare, flat the whole thing and paint again. Trying to feather the edge between the base and the clear never works, and for the amount of ball-ache it would be more economical to paint the bonnet or buy a second hand one in the same colour. :?

Good point, I only saw the first photo now, maybe you could get away with flatting the bonnet along the swage lines, and blowing in just that area, using the fold as a cut-off?

I poured hot water over mine and gradually worked them off, take your time. I did make sure there was a few good coats of wax on the car before applying them !

the best way of removing vinyls is with a steamer, like what you would strip wallpaper off walls. Falling that a hot air gun and if you dont have either a hairdryer.

hmmmm carbon bonnet would be amazing, read on Demlot's post that a carbon bonnet saves about 10kg, what does that equate to in hypothetical HP gain?

im really not sure however it would save on a respray, would have to sand it down etc to get it to spraying condition and i just cba with that. also the carbon bonnet would be kind of unique. i think ive only seen one e30 with a carbon bonnet.

another benefit of this is that it would tempt u to go one step further with a carbon boot lid and because of the color etc it wouldnt stand out too much, would look relatively standard. but yeah, thats a personal perspective on the situation without taking money into consideration etc.
