Side impact protection (door bars)?

Just taken the door cards off my RHD 318i 2 door to find...a side impact protection bar in the passenger door but not in the driver's door. This seems a bit odd. Would one have been originally fitted to the driver's door as well?

I changed my driver's door last week ('89 325iSE 4-door) for a non-rusty one from a touring of the same year. The original door had a sturdy bar inside it, just above the trim; the touring one doesn't. I haven't checked any other doors yet. Maybe it was an option?

Seems like some have and some have not got these fitted, so you may be right. I'll just leave as is I think.
