bought an e30 with personal plate...

iv never had a personal plate before, and im already confused.
bought a '85 2 door 2.7 and want to get some of my hard earned back from the plate. it reads YOB T9, and all i have found so far is YOB 77T for 1494. the bloke who owned the car said it had been valued at 900, what should i do now?
should i try and sell it privately or throught a agent?
any companys you lot could recommend?
car will be mot'd and taxed within the next 2 weeks, then will be transferable.

Cars over 15 years old need to be inspected by the the DVLC to ensure they exist & are roadworthy.

It will cost you £110 to put the plate on retention from where you can sell it. Factor this in to your price.

I'm the last person to give advice about values for plates as I think they're all worthless (although F550 on my 635 might be worth something to a Ferrari Maranello owner ). I was advised to contact some of the plate dealers & see what they offered.

YOB 9T should appeal to some scumbag with an asbo!

the car itself is a 2door black 320, no sunroof, no leccy windows, zender front bumper
needs a pair of front wings and a top mount, runs excellent and actaly does go like a train...feels quicker than my recent 535isport

No, it's not enough. My 320 Cab had to be inspected & so did my Father-in-laws '89 944 before the plates could be transferred.

I think it depends on the circumstances and where you get the transfer done. I didn't have to have my Orion inspected when I transferred the plate onto the E30.

As long as the car has an MOT, you can transfer the plate onto a retention cert from where you can sell it. The local DVLA office may want to see the car prior to agreeing the transfer but as long as you do not specify the original number back and leave it to them to allocate a reg number, then in my experience of transferring numerous plates, you should be sound. Order a retention pack from here:

Try to sell it privately. All the companies will give you peanuts for it and then want big money selling it on. Stick it on eBay as "on retention so ready for immediate transfer" and go from there. Value wise, Plates are only EVER worth what someone will pay. Don't even bother looking at what other people are asking....most are chancing their arm. Also look to put it in E&M. However if your serious about moving it quick, sell for a realistic sum. I would put it at £600 - £750 and expect it to move quite fast.

A few years ago, suffix and prefix plates were considered as not being proper. However as they age, they make more sense. I would say yours is a fairly desirable plate but for short term. By this i mean it's funny to someone in there late 20's to mid 30's but when they are in their 40's would they put it on their Lexus? My mate bought HOT 69 way back. Funny back then but he wouldn't dream of putting it on his 06 plate e60 530d sport.

The DVLA have apparently dropped there stupid 15 year and over inspection rule! I had to get my car inspected to transfer the plate off before i sold it last year, the guy doing the inspection said it was a waste of there time, and now he was proved right.

The private plate that was on my touring when i bought it had to be transfered and when it was neither car was inspected. My touring got its original reg back.

So did my Orion. .....And the new V5 was marked "non-transferable registration mark" or something similar. Wasn't even an interesting registration either - G6xx SAV.

Well both my Cab & the FiL's 944 got their original plates back.

The Cab was in Huddersfield & the 944 in Northumberland.

Both were done at the end of this summer.

Both had to be inspected.

So Scrotty's car may or may not need inspecting

Whatever it is it's very council so get rid of it quick. I would advertise it in the ford mags, it would look at home on a staffire or even better that tatted up sweaty losers X5 in this months total BMW !
