just picked up my car from havin the exhaust made, 3" down pipe into 2.5" strait through, cost me 850 all in wich is a bit steep but he has done a very nice job of routin everything,
got it running first time with the lambda sensor in and she sounds very sexual....
just got a water leak that mi gonna have to find tommorrow with a hangover, but im just pleased its running.
still lots to do like a new low comp bottom end in the near future and stiffer valve springs.
il get some pics tommorrow and hopefully a vid to post up.
this engine is goona get ragged rotten an il learn how to tune it on this motor so when i put the new one in il know a little more about the tuning side.
santa pod here i come!!!!!!!!!!!!! winkeye

£850 8O that is steep. is it a single or twin pipe system? who made your system up? i got a single 3" pipe system for my engine with just a single rear silencer and the sound is a great deep rumble thats been known to set of car alarms as i trundle past .my neighbours are greatly impressed :D

yeah its a single pipe with one strait through silencer, and the wasteb gate is open to the atmosphere, all stainless, the guy is a real perfectionist and really looks like it should be on a show car, its a pity i have to heat wrap it!!
things are quite expencive over here..........
just happy i have it back he has had it for over a month!!!

for me looks arent important on something that will only be seen if i crash and roll my car so i wasnt to fussed over the general looks as long as it serves its purpose. mine is also stainless steel and cost me about £350 iirc but my wastegate is internal in the turbo.

not that i wish to dampen your sprits but from that picture and perhaps it is just that picture but it looks way to low

one bump + one very low £850 exhaust = disaster and your - - - - -£850 is broken

how low is it off the flor mate ?

looks nice though

thats excessively low imo. he's taken the quickest easiest route straight below everything .thats even lower than mine and mine has about 3 1/2 inches clearance and mine hits all the speedbumps.id be taking that back to get it routed a bit higher up. constant hitting off the speedbumps was the main reason i reckon for my exhaust manifold pulling the mounting studs out the head requiring a strip down and helicoils fitted to the head.

is it all short lengths of pipe welded together rather than a one piece shaped /bent pipe? thats a lot of welds to possibly crack when hitting speedbumps.

plenty of speed humps but i aint shy...
its not under the diff but for some reason where it goes under the rear arm it is very low but when i towed it back we went over a few humps to test it and it aint that bad, but its 60/60 at the mo so im gonna slap on the 40mm springs on the back to bring the ass end up abit or i dont think il get it on the boat over..

the starting problem i have maybe the timing? would it throw everything out of whack if it was out by even one tooth?

Here's a few shots of mine, it's a DIY job, Ant came up to watch me try and weld it all, managed to proper burn my arm doing it but it wasn't expensive, just fun to do

Downpipe under the bulkhead:

Centre section:

Steering clearance:

Under rear beam:

It's been under constant change, the brackets have been changed and adjusted in order to remove some of the clamps, the one under the rear beam is now gone. It's got about 3 inch under the beam and more everywhere else.

The only speed bumps that cause a problem and the small and tall ones, these will catch if allowed too.

It took about 3 or 4 hrs to cut, weld and fit it, just the steering being a PITA!

nice!! was really tight round my steering too but well worth it and shows a 3" downpipe can be done!! i just didnt have the space to do mine, if the new springs on the back dont sort the problem out il take it back to him..

the bigger the better, as they say... i speak to the guys on ppf a bit an they say that for good power 3" is the smallest you would want to go, most go with 3.5" at least and some 4" but thats just not possible on a right hand drive, i just wanted to get the biggest dowpipe possible so it wouldnt be a back pressure issue at higher boost with aggressive timing

i thought biggest isnt always the best on turbo'd systems as a certain amount of back pressure is required to stop oil from blowing through the rear seals on the turbo?
again this could just be mechanics bullsh1t though.

well from the way i understand is the m20 motor doesnt resond that well to back pressure with the head only bein 12 valve, but it does respond well to boost if its set up right, the more back pressure you have the hotter you are and the more prone to det you are so try to keep the gas flowing as easy as possible especialy at the downpipe where the gasses are at there hottest and are expanded if you get what i mean?
dont quote me on that though

golden rule.....

the downpipe needs to be at least as big as the turbine outlet, going too big directly after the turbine does have a negative effect on flow.

As stated above, anything over 3" is just not gonna happen short of a LHD swop

forget the bore sizing, its the EGT thats the key to this, all things are relative though.

^ spot on !

Measured @ no 6 cylinder, the EGT's give you a much better idea of how well the engine is breathing, very useful for setting up the igniition timing too.

replied on your FAO dude :thumb:

MS can "do" EGT but you need to make up the circuit( or add the *error daughtercard* ) and weld a bung into the runner to take a K type thermocouple, not a nightmare to complete.
