those are parts of your starter motor. the CPS is a sensor with a plug on the other side that tells the ECU that the engine is turning and this in turn sends current to the spark plugs and activates the fuel injectors.

what year is your car and what size engine?

Mine is a 1991 325i, i'll be changing my CPS tomorrow!

You won't find it anywhere near the starter motor on a '91!
I've been misleading bmania a bit, 'cause I didn't realise it was an old one.
CPS on a '91 is at the front of the engine, on the right hand side, near sump gasket level.
