you will be better off fitting the head unit lower down in the center console just behind the ash tray and put the dvd where the head unit would have been as the vent size is much bigger then din size but you can make a face for it .
you will also have to block the venting behind to stop heat getting in that area

The center vent is held into the dash by 4 plastic flanges.
2 large ones on top and 2 smaller ones on the bottom.
The best way to remove them without damaging the dash would be to remove the dashboard and push it out from the back.
If you cant do that (or are unwilling) the plastic clips are 5.5cm from the center on the top and bottom. You might be able to insert a screwdriver into the radio hole and lever it out from the bottom.

fitting behind the ash tray area seems a good idea. is it simple to cut out a din slot in the plastic or are there things behind to watch out for?? as i would like to cut it out in place??

behind the ashtray is the best place for it mate..but i like smithy,s idea of putting the head unit up there in the vent.. i can see that being the springtime project for the sport..if i ever get the paint job finished

i fitted a stereo down there in my 320 i had several years ago as it was one of the first kenwood masks without the removeable faceplate. fitted it in the centre console and made a vinyl covered plate to disguise it from the scrotes who tried to remove it from my previous car.seem to remember making a frame to space it forward a little too for some reason.

just a point but if you have aircon dont break out the stanly knife cause you will have a bigger heater box and i dont think the radio will fit.

There is an easier way to make one fit folks

Use the trim panel from a LHD car to allow the screen to power out without hitting the indicater stalk
