I aint got a clue about Porsches but I really like the look of them.

Which ones were around the same time as the e30?

Which were popular and good reliable cars?

And which are reasonably priced nowadays?

924 and 944. The 325i was very similar in performance to the 944!

Yea the 924 and 944 non turbo is the closest you get to an standard E30.
The 924 is not a rocket and got the nick Audi Porsche in Scandinavia because of the power plant form Audi! The 944 is more in 325 m-sport terretory becasue it is a f.... good car!

in the 80s Yuppies started with a Golf GTi, followed it with a 325, next was a 944 and finally a 911.

I had a 944 for a couple of years about 5 years ago. Fantastic car. Appart from praticality better in every way than a 325 (if slightly slower in base model). Parts were bloody expensive - The insurance paid £1400 for a new rear window! The only reason I don't have one now is image of old 944 - not as "classic" looking as E30.

One of my favourite Porsches is the 968... although that's a bit newer.

If I were after a porsche which wasn't going to cost an arm & a leg to keep I would go for a nice 924, bits are reasonably priced. From what I am aware 944's seem to be a bit of a liability, although a nice late 944 Turbo or S2 would be nice

the 924 is another car ive been looking at buying lol.

the 924 uses the vw/audi engine which is reliable if not quick. think its about the same hp as an m20b25. the turbo is the one to have, sometimes known as a 931 by anoraks, but im not sure if that uses the vw or porsche engine. check carefully for gearbox problems on early turbos as they have the dodgy "snail" transaxle wich is gash and expensive to fix when it blows up.

the 924s uses the porsche engine which will apparently need a £2k front end rebuild every 2years.....sounds horrific. its obviously quicker though.

the 924 is also in dire need of a bodykit and most of the 944 panels fit. you can also get carrera replica bodykits which are pure sex. 8)

if you go for 968 watch out for top end rattle as this usually means a bill for 2 grand for a new camshaft or two.

the 924 in standard guise is nothing like as quick as an m20 2.5 the only 924 thats really worth having is the s the 944 is a good car but is significantly more expensive to maintain than an e30 this is even more true of the 911.

I would rather get my self one of these instead of an Porsche 924...
I know it doesnt have good quality, I know it rust, I know parts can be a pain, but its a much better looking car then the silly 924! *sorry*

But it looks so much better and it have even higher numbers on the fugures from the data sheet.

Used to have a Scirocco GT2, once i lowered it a tad and fitted decent rubber it handled very well

My only porsche experiance was my bosses old 944... the gearbox was whineing its nuts out and half the electrics worked when they felt like it.

couldnt agree more, the way the headlights pop out the bonnet is just... insane. i dont think any supercars really live up to them standards at the moment, maybe the Zonda but thats about it imo.

you can sort of tell though if the driver of the porsche knows anything about their car based on the model they buy lol... sometimes true but not all the time :o:

Ive had a 944, cracking car but has more achillies heels than any german marque has a right to... probably due to lack of maintenance over the years though.

Fantastic handling, torquey engine, looks good in an eighties Miami Vice sort of way - a nice drive and can get a half decent one for a couple of grand.

it just goes to show how strange cars are. i have an eighties air cooled 911 carrera but i just cant stop looking at e30's. i love em to bits. maybe its the fact that cars had individuality back then which they tend to lack nowadays. Give me an e30, any old porsche, MK1 escort or original audi quattro any day over a brand spanking new motor...
