The point here was a sport replica can be built with considerable cost saving over purchasing a sport to begin with
I'm not totaly sold on that one yet!

Well everyone has their own oppinion/view on this subject but in the society we live in today fakes are considered second best and people WILL pay the extra to have the real thing so i guess in some peoples eyes that makes me a badge snob although i would not consider myself to be one.

As for engineering and not artistic creativity...

I would consider my E30 to be art but beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc etc.

Fair play. I completely agree with your opening paragraph. Even if in this instance the fake is every bit as good as the original.

But im pretty sure you wont end up saving much money than if you went out and bought the actual sport...Parts aren't that cheap anyway unless you get fibreglass parts, but then you have to pay extra to get it worked on to make them fit properly.

But same as bss325, prefer the original parts than aftermarket...

Its not just the parts ,its the painting of the mtech kit/the cost of carrige etc etc and it all adds up for different things.

I like my designer ware's as much as the next person but im not above the likes of next and top man, but thats beside the point.

When it comes to cars i do tend to like the better stuff including parts and mods etc.

I guess thats part of the reason i like BMW's, not so much the oneupmanship, more the quality of the product.

Hit the nail on the head? What that it would cost the same amount to build a sport rep as to buy one?
The original argument was why the big diference in value when rosco has just clearly proved it would cost the same.

ok then, so when i did my engine swap and i went to bmw for all my parts, i asked them if it would be possible for bmw to accept it as a 2.5, his words were, it can be done but its a big headache, you have to get bmw gb to authorise it.

You've got to paint the kit & fit everything on top of those prices. Even if you're doing it yourself, surely nobody calls changing a gearbox 'fun', so you've got to put a value on your time...

Like i say thou,theres painting of kit (sods law you will end up with wrong colour!) carrige of bits etc...
Can you get a really nice (rustfree)basic 325i for £1200?


Yes some Sports are very expensive(and we all know of the 15k one),but just for a very nice sport i would reckon £3500-£4500.

Any labour costs in there at all?

There is also the upside that, most often, a good sport will have been very well looked after for the last 15+ years.

Sorry mate but your car will always be a 320, whatever engine you fit. There is nothing BMW or you can do about it. You can change the engine, the gearbox, the diff, the suspension, the brakes but you can't change what it started life as and that is what to a large extent dictates the value.
Which begs the obvious question, why didn't you buy a 325 ? :?

3k for something with over 150000 miles and in need of tlc

4.5k for something tidy and around 100000 miles

My 45000 mile MINT sport is worth 6k all day long and im no dreamer.

WLN sell minters with higher milage than mine for 7k

and the bottom line is people will pay the money.

As you have said in a previous post, you can get an M3 for 6k but it will be a dog with plenty of miles. To get an M3 in the equivilant condition of my sport you will be paying 10k for the privilage.

im only going on what the fella said to me... why didnt i buy one?? better the devil you do than the devil you dont.... i can guarentee that my 325 engine is a good one, if i was to buy a 325 it would be like a mine field, buy it, re bush it, track rod ends, new rack if it needed it, you get the picture, my 320 has had all of the above done plus a freshly rebuilt 2.5 in it.

so you have a low milage 325??? if someone is willing to give you 6k for it then so be it. i would not be parting with anymore than 3.5k, if i had 6k to blow it wouldnt be on a m20!

To be fair the "doner"may already have some of the Sport features,you will be lucky thou!

Like you say thou ,it will always be considered a fake and will have a resale value below that of a genuine Sport and having forked out money to a similar tune as a Sport would cost anyway,you could be onto a loser.But like i say in my first post some people will "enjoy" the work .

Add on maplight mirror, opening rear windows, check control, battery in boot, blah balh

Wate of time making a fake sport, i had good fun making my old one though. Ended up costing 3.5k! So....just buy a sport if you want one.

Thats just you! Doesn't mean the rest of the market wont!

I wouldn't buy a 320i, have a 2.5 engine refurbished the put it in place.
I would just buy a 325i to start with and so what i you know your car.
