Think ive got this right, for the M30 conversion i need the top rad hose from E32/E34 530 OR 535I and bottom rad hose from a E28 535I or a E24 635I CSE. Has anyone got pics of both or either, have had a look on realoem but its hard to tell which is top or bottom as it doesnt actuall show where they come off the rad. Thanks.

Well the rad stubs would be in different places so you would need different, or heavily modified hoses I rekon. I'd definitely try and get an e28/e24 rad though, they are much better, and a piece of piss to fit. I would sell you my spare, but after destroying one in Germany and not having a replacement and consequently ruining my ring trip I have learnt to carry a spare.

Have got a e28 rad Theo, it seems to hold water ok but looks a bit ropey. It will do for now though.
Thanks again for your input.

Ahh ok, definitely go with that, can always swap to a better condition rad when the opportuniuty arises.

BTW - you will need to chop a bit off the top rad hose to get it to fit nicely. If you look at the engine bay pic of Shaz's 335 for sale thread you will see what I mean...

A few people are using the E34 rad but it doesnt fit quite as easily, has a thicker core, but smaller surface area. The thinner E28 rad is better suited due to the close proximity of the HT leats to the rad. I used an E34 rad as a temp fix when i destoryed my e28 rad, and the car ran a little hotter, but this could be down to the slight kink in the bottom rad hose which arose due to the different positioning of the bottom rad outlet.

E28 Rads are available brand new from GSF (just bought one!), so you won't struggle there. It seems everyone struggles to find one bit - mine being that elusive manifold!

Theo, what did you use to mount the rad at the bottom, & did you manage to get the top hose on ok once you'd trimmed it?! It's a blimmin tight fit already, without chopping off the flared end! :)

£105 IIRC... but it fits so well (& is so much bigger than an E30 rad), I just couldn't be bothered to bodge anything else into there! (I got a $hagged one with the rest of my E28 bits, if you're wondering how I knew it fitted easily!)

Still no sign of the mani

Ziggy, lubrication is your friend! It's a very tight squeeze to get the trimmed hose on the stub, but not too hard.

The bottom of my rad is very poorly secured, i used a couple of modifed transmission rubber mounts .... it's a long story.

Crazy isn't it! Thanks though... I'm still holding out some hope that it'll turn up eventually!
Second hand rads do come up... I just didn't want the hassle tbh.

Guess I'll have to pop to the shops for something slippery then! winkeye
& at least the top of the rad's easy to secure - I'm assuming facelift shells have the 2 ready made mounting points too? :)

:?

Was it just water, or oil too? If it's just water then it must have got in (condensation / leaky roof - did you leave the filler cap off or something?) while the engine's been sat about, but if it was water & oil it might be bad news... If water had been mixing with the oil when it was running, it might well have separated out when left standing. Was there any evidence of mayo etc when you got the engine?

If it wasn't there before, I wouldn't worry about it! Just flush it out with some cheap oil. :)

Erm... it's not difficult, but tbh I wouldn't start thinking along those lines yet. If it was only a tiny amount of water (& it was fine before!), just flush it through with some cheap oil & it'll probably be fine. Even if it's not, you'll get it the conversion finished, & the worst case is a straight engine swap...

I used a couple of self tapping screws to hold the bottom of my E28 rad, there's sort of a metal tab bit at the bottom of the rad so drill through this and into the cross member thing, not probobly the best way to do it but it was easy !
