Does anyone have any experience building a parcel shelf for the e30 to take some decent 6 1/2 mid range subs. I dont want to lose boot space or reduce the low power to weight ratio, I already have. I however want the sound as rattle free as possible. I also want to make use of the baffle the boot would provide. I dont intend to cut any metal either. Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks

heres a few pics
however to get the 6x9's and 7x10's in, some cutting of the metal underneath had to be done.
you could try using a couple of layers of mdf and putting the 6 1/2 subs on top of them (like in pic) but too many mdf layers could obscure your rear view (as shelf will be highertherefore you cant look behind fully)

thanks for the pictures. It looks like u have loads of speakers in that car. Are u a sound quality person, or a sound pressure person. Are u happy with the sound? Did u need to do a lot of sound deadening?

that car has a mixture of sound,
i have disconnected the 6x9s now and taken thm out so more air from the subs in the boot can be pushed out.
the 7x10's are really clear and crisp, everyone who sits inside or even from far out can hear the songs clearly
there are 2 15" rockford fosgate subs in the back in a sealed enclosure, so the push alot of air but not as enough as a ported box.
due to the metal plate in the boot it does kill alot of the sound, whereas in a hacthback the setup would be awesome.
i didnt really get a chance to sound deaden the car so from outside the boots makes all sorts of noises and kills off alot of the sound.
when you have some bass for a while you get used to it so now i am after something better but looking to get 2 12" subs inseatd so i can save a bit of space

i have done all that you say you are after - but i have cut the necessary metal away. i don't see how you can achieve what you want to achieve without metal removal - the shelf isn't designed for that setup.

You becoming the resident ice goru (-: It is nice to talk with someone who have real experience with putting in ice in the e30. I would love to hear the system sometime. I will give u a shout when I am around portsmouth.
I have some 5 inch pioneer components in my car. The tweeters on the dashboard with double sided tape. I too was going to put a sub in the boot but the guy in the shop advised I would need a reasonable sized sub as the car is so insulated from the boot. Then my concern about this was the boot lid rattling because it is not the most sturdy lid, compared to a heavy lid of a hatchback. So not alot of effective base for the money.
I have been advised against cutting metal in the shelf as it plays a big part of the structural rigidity. I however have not taken off the back seat to look and form my own oppinion.
I now have to check my components as the vibration from the one under the glove box may be coming from it hitting the trim.
Yes big fan of reggae.

i only just completed my congo natty collection on vinyl - have spent the last few days trying to mix them down to cd for the car but am not happy with the results yet...
e30adam has just put an article on e30 ice in the articles section. the part about upgrading front speakers whould help you with your problem.

There really isn't any need to build a shelf it depends on your future plans, if you plan to fit a sub, then forget the shelf, its alot of work which has a slight noticeable effect on the lower frequencies of the speaker mounted on it.
