on the passenger side of the engine bay there is a large metal canister with a screw on lid, there is a piece of wire mesh under the lid, what is this for?

Thats the power steering/power brake reservoir. The mesh is to stop animals/children/smeg contaminating the oil !
Level should be checked with car switched off and you must pump the brake pedal approx 20 times or until hard ( with engine off!) Oil used is ATF. I am assuming it is a 525i or better ?

thanks pete, no wonder the old dutch had trouble steering the old girl out of the car park today, and its a 528 and we love it

I meant to add the level when checked as above should be just above the screen/filter.
