We need more 2.8 conversions, so few on here, is there more than 1?

Is the m20 that bad?

No dont answer that winkeye

sigh i wish we had the euro higher compression pistons in the states :(
With the i head on the eta bottom end we only net 8.2 :1cr
and the 731 on the eta only gets you 9:1 CR.
you lot are lucky

The 731 will not change compression ratios on a ETA.
as the chamber has the same physical shape.

To me a 731 on a ETA bottom end with 325i intake and exhaust system just make budget sense. Everything can be had for the ultimate cheap.
And fit´s without any modifications. I´d say it gives 170-180hp with a huge powerband, give it some 20psi with a HX50 and you could be doing low 11´s like the swedes (I´m referencing to an actual low 11´s E30 using for mentioned parts)
With great challenges comes great engineering.

I've put 30,000 miles on my 2.7 over the last 5 years. It's the eta complete bottom end with a standard 325 head. I should have changed the injectors from 320 to 325 I guess and uprated the original 320 ECU, but never got around to it. Loads of torque at 4000 rpm, and it still impresses the Frenchies who cling to the rear bumper

How can I find out if they sold the Eta in Italy? The only one that I've seen here is a U.S. import...

Excellent... :D So Onz, is your 2.7 an Alpina or did you build it?

BMW built it mate ;) My engine, box, drivetrain, diff brakes suspension etc.. all came out of a genuine Alpina C2 2.7 Touring and was rebuilt by Sytners into the 318i chassis that you see in my sig about 5 years ago. Long story but ill probably do a build post about it when i finally have time. Due to run it on MS in the new year too :D

That's awesome. Thanks. I'm looking in two different directions... My main point of focus is that I desperatly need more power than what my 2L has to offer. I'm trying to figure out what's going to give me more bang for the buck: 2.7 vs. FI on my 2.0. You know? It's a little frustrating.

Yeah I know the feeling, I had similar issues with my 320i. In the end I had bought a 325i inlet and throttle body and was looking for a 323i cam. The 320 can go really well with the right setup, but bang for buck ure better off with a transplant. Although if u did want to do something a bit different try standalone and throttle bodies or bike carbs with a 323i cam it should give you just over 2.5 power. AND no cracked head issues!

I have a 325i manifold and TB spare if u need them but not sure how much postage to Italy will cost.

(PS. 6 branch is a good investment as it is reusable on all the M20 6 cyl engines)

6 branch? I'm out of the loop on some of the lingo :? I'm not sweating head issues with the FI route. I know that I don't want to run more than 8psi and I've done my homework. Apparently, because I have the later head casting, I shouldn't have to worrie about the head too much.

hehe, what I meant was that 2.5 heads are prone to cracking where the 2.0 heads havnt has as much metal taken away so are slightly stronger and sound awsome.

6-branch means 6 branch manifold like the BTB or Automac, or Hot tuning produce. It is a replacement manifold and downpipe made of stainless steel, looks  and releases more power.

Wouldn't the 320i head need at least 325i camshaft upgrade though?

late 323i cams are 260 degrees, and 325i ones are 252 degrees IIRC. So yea, 323i cams are better.

Excellent thread that I'm looking for!
Greetings from E30 register BMW Car Club of Indonesia

Can someone inform me what is the maximum bore that we can do to M20 B20 block with 80mm bore?Is it possible to bore it to 84mm?
If yes, I plan to make 2.8 M20 engine using 84mm crankshaft for E39 528i plus crankshaft spacer, M20 B20 conrod (130mm length) and M40 B18 piston which I have to shave the top of the piston 2.25mm, then I will use M20 B20/B23 cylinder head with M20 B25 throttle body and intake manifold. The reason is because those parts are easily obtained in my country, except the M20 B25 throttle body and intake manifold which I have to source them from eBay perhaps.

Thanks for your attention guys

The B20 block can be esily bored to 84mm. That's one of the methods of building the 2.7L engine that everyone on here talks about. The other method is to put the B20 head on the Eta block. You should look for the member on here named "Ant." He builds these engines as an occupation. He's also very helpful when he has time to be on the computer.

There are also many other members that have extensive knowledge on building the 2.7 engines up. "Onz" would be one of them. I my self am just getting started. I hope to build my own 2.7 before the end of 2008!

You could also see if "daimlerman" or "oze30" could give you some advice I suppose. This is my thread that I've got going: http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... 238#926238

Good luck on your engine build :)
