Whats the best affordable tyres for E46 318i. 205/16/55?
Do the fronts have to be the same as the rears?

IME jap tyres can be quite good in the dry, not so good in the wet, and don't last very long.
In that size you are spoiled for choice.
If I were you, I'd get Uniroyal Rainsport at 58.40 GBP on mytyres.
If I was going' cheap', it would be jap but Falken 452s, and at 48.60 it's not that much cheaper than the Uniroyals
(both in 91W), so get the Uniroyals.
As I witnessed yesterday on the M27 as someone crashed literally in front of me, there's nothing more important than decent tyres.
