There is a reason for the green line graduating from thick to thin. Its to denote the higher the revs the less economic the engine is at that speed.

This might sound like a strange observation, but arn't these clocks for a 2.7? If so, isn't the redline too high?

I might be wrong, but I'm sure that Hartge originally designed these clocks for a (higher revving) M car?

Nice workmanship tho.! 8)

Of course, you could just get your hands on some M clocks, and convert them.... then you get your temp gauge, instead of the MPG swingometer... :D

here are the first draft at dual oil/water(or whatever else you can measure) guages to replace the swingometer:

and in detail:

Position of needles, increments etc etc is all just guesswork at moment but they have done a great job from the crappy pics i sent them

What do you think, good mod?

I like.... I wish Schnitzer did something similar as I'd definitely have them for my car if they did!

Given that you're doing a big-budget conversion here, and that originality's an issue, I think I'd go for M3 clocks with the factory temp gauge, and a custom, lowered redline on the rev counter, but it's your car, and these certainly won't let it down! 8)

Have you seen the red H36 down at Birds? It's got a set of genuine Hartge auxiliary gauges down near the ashtray - does something similar feature in your plans? If so, it might be worth putting some other gauge where the MPG swingometer is on the instrument binnacle?

Now when are you going to resurrect your original build thread so we can all share in your plans?

I still can't get on the PBMW forum, Dips346 - if you're reading this, get it sorted...! 8O

The originality thing is interesting but a bit of a red herring. Hartge never did anything like the dual guages so its really just a mod, its not changing an original hartge part so i wouldnt be bothered by doing it. Bit like adding the black diamond disks, the H27 didnt come with altered disks so the black diamond are not 'unoriginal' from a Hartge perspective, they are simply modified over the standard BMW spec. (the fronts will have the correct pads though)

As long as th car has the things it SHOULD have, as per H27 then I am quite open minded about other stuff, that to my eye, is an improvement.

On the subject of the auxilary guages by the ashtray, Hartge are fitting these, complete with period VDO guages so yes, its a good suggestion!

Just not that keen to be honest, but luckily wheels dont normally wear out so if i change my mind at some point I just have to be patient and a set will come up.

happy with the 16'' classics for now (when i can get a courier to actually pick them up that is!

I take your point, but Birds did commission ten sets of Hartge 180mpg speedometer binnacles, so I'd have thought it would make sense to replicate what they did originally, then your car will be 100% UK Hartge spec. (with a little dash of ///M goodness!)

But if you're going for the auxiliary gauge panel, what's the point in replacing the swing-o-meter in the instrument binnacle? You'll have the option of (accuarate) VDO oil and water gauges, so you'll just be getting the same info twice!

I hope you take my comments as constructive, I'm not trying to pi$$ on your bonfire! :D

Its good feedback, speedo will be as per Hartge spec so not issues there. For the tacho and the dual guages this was more in response to a good suggestion from someone earlier in the thread. A lot of people think that the pictures of other peoples cars showing (oil/diff/water) in the Hartge guage pods is what you got but thats incorrect, the full list (as per the brochure) was actually:

Oil pressure
Oil temp
Voltmeter
Outside temp
water temp

You could pick three from those, so if I used Oil temp and Water temp for the dual guage pod on the tacho i could put the other three on the hartge centre console pod.

Its a bit of a moot point because to get the 'bits' fitting/calibrated and working properly behind the dial plate illustrated is something i dont have time for just yet, want to carry on with the main parts of the project but it is something i will be asking some other people to work on for me so do expect it to happen, it was after all, a very good suggestion!

Ok, given that I'm on a roll, you need to resurrect your original build thread.

There's not one aspect of your car that's not going to get the treatment, paint, suspension, wheels, interior, instruments, engine everything's getting gone through, so why not share the knowledge!!

Plus in the unlikely event that you ever decide to sell, you've got a photographic record of the build.

Come on, you know it makes sense!!! :D

Yup, new speedo is identicle to that, did wonder why they did it to 180mph though, a tad optimistic. I'm going to see if i like the plain printed logo or the backlit one best though.

If you need any parts i have some spares left over Simon, i bought secondhand for some items but then replaced with brand new, not going to list them on here but let me know if anything in particular.

Speedo read to 180mph 'cos it was for the H36, which IIRC did 172ish mph....

Like the idea of the twin gauge replacing the MPG thingie, but why water temp? The standard gauge is just above.. I would have oil temp/oil pressure. Can your maker do a short run of these,or would Hartge object? I would imagine that we could raise a group buy for oil temp/oil pressure...much better to see in the binnicle than hidden down by the ash tray. You need silly things there that are not critical such as diff temp and G/F snatch temp...

The dual guage is a seperate dial therefore nothing to do with Hartge, remember though, you still need to fit the mechanisms behind the guage plate. Let me get the guys to do a mockup of oil temp/oil pressure and if you guys want them i can organise a group buy for that no problem.

I did explain (in a very simplistic way) what would be involved to get the dual guages working from an electro/mechanical perspective, earlier in the thread, i see the two hardest things are getting the mechaisms to fit and calibrating them to the markings on the dials. Be sure you (or someone you know) can do this as i wouldnt want anyone to waste money on a dial they couldnt use!

I'll email the company and get prices, from other prices i have seen i doubt it would exceed £20
