Whats it like daily on the road??

reading the post about welded diffs and how welding it affects cornering was making me ask!

BIG difference betweem an LSD and a welded diff. The standard BMW LSD has 25% lockup, and you wouldn't really notice much difference between it and an open diff during everyday driving.

A welded diff is used for drifting only and is dangerous on the road.

I have an LSD with a bit better lock-up than the standard one (supposed to be a racing differential) and I still can't notice any difference in daily driving compared to an open diff, except that if I accelerate hard it grips very well.

If you are driving hard it would probably affect the cars turn in a little bit, but I go racing and to track days and turn in isn't a problem. The other thing is that unless you have enough power to spin both the rear wheels it might also cause understeer under hard acceleration out of corners. I can't spin my wheels on dry bitumen but I don't have much problem with understeer, sometimes there is a little bit but then most cars will understeer a bit anyway not just because of the LSD.

The clutch pack type differentials (like the E30 has) don't afffect drivability much or at all, something like a Detroit Locker would though (more like a welded diff).

its not a savage 2way LSD. a rubbish amount of lock like the bmw Lsd's you'll barely notice it, welded diffs are a whole different ballgame.

even a 75% lock uprated bmw LSd is still perfectly fine as a daily driver

lsd is fine for daily use and a lot better for pulling out of junctions etc....as u dont get loada of silly single wheel spin..

it may be nit picking but when i put an open diff on temporarily...the car turned in 'slightly' (i mean very slightly) better.

wouldnt have a rwd car without an lsd ever again though!

I had an open diff in my old M50 powered E30 and it was grim stuff! The inner wheel would spin up on roundabouts and traction sometimes was an issue cause you could feel the rear wheels fighting for power.

The LSD works even when your not drifting/on the edge of traction, you can feel it working around hard corners.
