Make sure service history backs up the mileage 100%, listen for knocking from the front of the engine......if you hear knocking, walk away.
I am by no means an expert, i am looking for one at the moment too with help from a few other zoners. I am sure you will get alot of info from them very soon......

are you after just the m3 or the evo?
just make sure they have good service history,
and then theres the good old vanos unit. everyone cries on about the evo having loads of problems with them, but i no quite a few peeps with evos and none have had any trouble with them. i think the normal m3 vanos can be just the same if not looked after properly.
evo is prob more expensive to keep on the road but has better fuel econ be cos of the six speed box.
all i can say i get one!!! i sold my cabby in january and brought the 36 m3 evo and totally love it. do miss the cabby a bit though.

rear subframe carrier ripping off the underbody is a not too common but deffinately documented fault
the vanos (normally the magnetic valve switch)
Smg on an evo is v pricey if it goes west
manifold "meshing" between the branches and the downpipe on cyls 4-6 weakens and cracks resulting in dead exhaust.
maf troubles depending on age and condition
