EDIT: 19/12/07

Due to the cockend Direcotor of college deciding that as this is not a boat, I am not allowed to use my ex-student discount to purchase the materials I need to make these, especially at the price I quoted :(

I'm not sure if these will ever happen, but it will be one of the first things on my list to do once I start my new job late January.

Sorry guys,

Ed

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly, if this is against trading rules I apologise.

Right, I'm currently studying a boat building course and as a typical student I'm running slightly low on funds still with a month left on my course.

So, as I have a 318iS still with its spoiler, I was wondering if it would be worth my while using the facilities I have at my disposal here at college and making some replicas?

I have actually lined up a job for after I finish, but I dont start until Jan 23rd, so this wont be a long time offer.

So, who would be interested, and how much would you be prepared to pay?

I could probably do a couple of "specs". A lightweight, track based one, and a heavier duty road one, both with light strengthening (balsa or foam probably). Both would be finished in gloss gelcoat, possibly even in various colours, although I culdn't gaurantee a colour match to BMW paint.

Anyway, its just an idea at the minute, so what do you think??

Ta,
Ed

Would definatley be FRP, but the idea being that they'd be cheap enough to sling another on should one become a cropper to roadkill etc :)

dont like most aftermarket spoilers so a repro i.s would be ideal, i bet if you posted this in e30 chat rather than group buys you'd get a huge response

I'll PM a moderator and ask if this could be moved to e30 chat, although the response I've had already should be enough to warrant doing a trial run :)

As for price, I'm really not sure. I'm gonna speak to the stores manager today and find out how much I'll be charged for the materials, then obviously a small profit on top. I'll update later this afternoon.

Cheers all,

Ed

There is someone already doing grp ones on ebay for circa 50 quid so yours would have to compete with them both on price and qaulity.

£50!!! Crikey, I was thinking absolute tops of £40, probably nearer £30 depending on how much glass/resin I use to make the mould (has to be uber tough)

As for quality, like I said I'm currently training to be a boat builder, and GRP is one of the parts of the trade I'm assessed on. So far I've got a distinction overall, as I'm still waiting for some of the results for my paperwork.

I will be fitting one to my tourer, and wouldn't do so if I wasn't happy.
I was also thinking of giving a couple out very cheap to people on e30zone see what the general view of quality is before selling them.

If you are interested in being a "guinea pig" then let me know via PM. Closer to Lyme Regis in Dorset the better, as it will reduce costs etc :)
BMJG wrote:spadge any idea on the link to that as can't find it :o:
This is the only one I can find, and I'm not sure this is the guy producing them. But £22 with 2 days to go.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E30-Lip-Spoil ... dZViewItem

Also, typically, there is a guy coming to look at my iS tomorrow to buy it, so if he does I'll have to source another spoiler to make a mould from, as between now and when he is coming tomorrow I dont have enough time :(

If anyone knows of an iS spoiler in fairly good condition for sale, let me know asap on 07799 767268. Or even if you have one you can lend me for a couple of days.

Cheers,
Ed.

ps, as for price, if we say a max of £35 as a rough guide, and it may come down depending on numbers interested/cost of mould etc.

pps, sorry to the moderators for the double post in e30 chat.

Since iS spoiler/splitters seem to be about as common as rocking horse sh*t this sounds a sensible and realistic alternative provided the finish is good. I'd be very interested.

Cool, if my 318iS doesn't sell today, I'll get a mould made up this weekend and get cracking on them. If it doesn sell I'll track down a lip spoiler and go from there. Bloody typical though, no interest in my car for a fortnight, and the one weekend I need it about, someone is coming to view it

Like I said, price would be £35 absolute tops. Hopefully cheaper :)

Will keep you all informed,

Ed.

ps, if more people are interested, please copy and add your name to this list.

The list is in no way confirmed orders, and in no particluar order, just a way for me to easily keep track of how many people are interested and who they are.

If you are on the list, and dont want to be, just copy & post it but remove your name.

Right. Typically the car sold, so I now dont have an iS spoiler to mould from.

Bear with me for a few days, I'll track one down and keep you all posted :)

Sourced an iS spoiler this morning, needs a bit of work, but I should have a mould and possibly the first GRp replica done by the end of the week.

Looking at it, GRP wont have the strength to hold it with just the standard clips, so it will have a flat lip over the top with strengthening in, and will need bolting to the underside of the bumper.

Obviously all hidden from sight. So actually better mounted the genuine BMW ones

Also, if anyone has a spare open diff in either 4.1:1 or 4.45:1 ratio in a small case, I will happily trade an iS lip spoiler for it ;)
