Applying that logic, there's little point in most cars above about 100bhp.

huh??

The only reason i say that is because you buy a sports car for its power and handling so chopping off the roof and adding weight is utterly pointless because not only are you making it slower you are compremising the handling!

Which in day to day motoring has little bearing.. You buy sports cars for the kudos, the pub bravado, image and the top trump performance bragging rights. Of which is rarely tested on a day to day basis by the demands of modern motoring.

The cabby is just another dimension to the same arguement. Yes it defies practicality, but then these sorts of cars aren't bought because of ther fuel economy or their NCAP safety rating. It's just nice to drive without a roof.

Lambo do a Gallardo Spider, (a drop top)as do most top marque sports car manufacturers. Not pointless, just an appeal to a different market.

Hence the 100hp comment. A 100hp car is capable at propelling you adequately to the speed limits on British roads, making the M3's performance, right across the board, by the same token logic applied to cabs, pointless.

I have an m3 evo and i use it for competitions therefore an m3 convertable imo is useless for what i want it to do, i did not buy my car for bragging rights i bought it to use it!

Imo if you buy a fast car you buy it to use it not to pose on a street corner!

I completely agree with you. The sad fact is most people don't use the cars as intended, which is where I was basing my point, on a majority.

In all fairness, the m3 hasn't been a out and out racing car since its e30 version. So this cabby has no expectations of it to perform in a competative environment. It's a fooking quick tourer.

What fecks me off is people that buy performance cars and never even drive them, lock them in a hermatically sealed room and look at them umder spot lights, from behind a window... Buy a fooking model car if that's what you want!!!!

lmao, i might be tempted, anyway i dont have a b20 anymore  shes gone away............ never to return the same. it was for the best.
the new m3 cab dosent have the looks, bmw have forgotten what the ///M is all about, lost through all the electronic aids and the general feel and drive of the car. no new M car will ever match the e30 m3's heritage.

Anyone who comes out with the old ' chopping the roof off means it wont handle as well..etc etc'' plainly does not realise that the 0.000001% difference in handling is only ever going to matter on a track, cars like this simply dont get near their limits on public roads and if you were to have this car at the limit on the road then you are an idiot.

Day to day driving there is zero difference, I've had M3's, E36 and E46, cab and coupes, no difference expect more scuttle shake on bad roads.

The rest is down to personal preference on looks.

And the fact that driving a cab (on the road) is more fun! :)

ps

You can hear the engine a lot more, and hence enjoy it better, on a good cab. I know my E46 sounded amazing roof down.

Agreed

Would love to see BM knock out another homologated race car. It would never be road legal and effective at the same time though. The M brand has moved on.

I own a coupe and have test driven verts (e36) and the verts were awfull! they felt alot slower and softer, i am speaking from experiance and as i have said before this is all imo, i like to race mine and i garuntee you a vert WILL be slower.

Just my opinion of what an m car is really for.

Thats what i am trying to say, i see an m3 to be a car you can take on a track day and thrash.

The kind of person that annoyes me is the kind of person i nearly bought a vert off,

I said, "i like the car but i am not sure about the vert bit", his reply was, "ahh its great, with the roof down when your driving through town and all the girls are looking"

In actuall fact all the credable girls are actually thinking "look ant that posing idot" "how small must his penis be"

That comment in an instant put the icing on the cake, it was the last reason i needed not to buy a vert.

I am not trying to offend anyone here, i just see the m3 vert as an out and out posing machine and not what the m3 is about at all.

Just my opinion!

there's nothing nicer than driving on a dry day with the roof down...a real experience ...not cooped in by a tin roof...if i wanted to go and race or do time trials i wouldn't buy a cab of any sort so why did you consider one in the first place..if you wanted to go on the track just for fun why not, you would enjoy it more with the roof down :D

The only reason i considered one was because i am in Jersey and m3's for sale are pretty rare, i gave into the test drive after months of looking for a coupe.

Then i thought sod that and bought one from england!

You're still applying too much personal experience and opinion to a general comment.

Most people don't buy cars to track and wont come close to pushing any M series car to the limits of its dynamics.

If you're not sure about the 'vert bit' why the fook are you even looking at one?

The seller was selling you a lifestyle. If you feel insecure then clearly you have you own issues and worry too much about what people think.

So what is the m3 about? 1 Race car, 3 Coupe variants. It's all about the flag ship model, enhancing company reputation and the badge. The convertible is just another string in that bow. In fact, include cabs in the equation, you have 1 race car, 7 non-race car variants.

They are excellent cars across the board. Where exactly does the m5 touring fit into your perceptions of what the marque is about? Time trialing the run to the vets and back?

The m brand is a performance angle, the cabs and the tourings can still perform. Taking the roof off cars like these doesn't turn them into something with a chassis like soggy cardboard. I'm sure the highly paid engineers locked away in Germany might actually know what they're doing...
