My 318 has started to sound tapperty (is that how you spell it??)
It's just turned 128k will full history. Is this easy to sort or is it a sign of nasty stuff to come ?? I only paid Ԛ£198 for the car so I wasn't expecting to much.. Any ideas ???

I guess it will require a loud stereo to drown out the tappets !!!

NO NO NO NO NO!
As its a splendid m40 you can not ajust the valves as the are hydralic (i can't spell today...) Only real way to stop the tapping is to have some head work done.....lots of money!
Try using an oil flush folowed by two changes of oil to rinse the flush out properly. Then use a nice expensive oil....This may help!

I wouldn't recomend any head for on an m40 engine...waste of money.
If you really want more power llok for a m42 from an IS can get an engine for around Ԛ£200 and its pretty much a straight swap....though beeter brakes+suspension will eventually be needed.
But is the shell worth it?

The shell is 100% solid with absolutely 0 rust... I suppose I could always drop my 5 series lump in it. The cars already been sorted with full Koni kit so I guess just the brakes would need sorting.

Put new hydrolic tappets in it, Check the cam for wear and then wait for the worn out oil pump to knaker the new tappets

Be thankful you're not my neighbour. On startup his 318i sounds like 14 horny skeletons having an all-out orgy on top of a tin shed. It sounds so bolloxed I'm amazed it still runs. There's no need for my alarm clock anymore 'cos him going to work at midday almost always wakes me up. How long before it dies, my vulturous eye is on the IS bib and 15" BBS's...

If it's just tappet noise at start up, it won't affect the life of the engine at all. Makes a hell of a racket, but harmless as long as they pump up after a while.

Do the engine flush as mentioned(make sure u read the tin thoroughly!) replace the oil spray bar, runnin across the cam, and check for splits in the pipe comin off the top right handside of the rocker cover. Bob's your uncle fanny's your aunt, job done!
If problem consists, change lifters.

Even if you get it rebuilt the head will wear down in 30k anyway.

If your going to get somebody to do it its going to cost 300-400 Ԛ£s which I personally wouldn't spend on an m40. If your going to do it your self, which is possible if you have the time..then maybe half that price, still a lot of money.
Try the engine flush and spray bar etc first... you may b lucky.
Good luck!

The engine pulls so so sweet and revs all the way with no probs at all. Except for the tappet there are no other clonks when reving.. My mate plays about with engines and reckons about Ԛ£160 to do it for me..
Hmmm decision time or do I get the 525 MOT'd instead and just carry on using the 318 as is (well after doing what you guys have suggesed)

Drive 'em both! A 3 series and a 5 series makes an 8 series, no?
I've got a 15 series
a 1578i in fact, 6 wheel drive, 10 doors

She hates E30's, she says they're to old to be a proper car !!!!
anyone want a 51 plate Clio Billabong !!! I'd settle on swapping her motor for a 328i Cabby for the summer...

I've bought nine accident Clios in the past year, so I know a little about how they are put together.
Anyone who prefers a Clio to an E30 is in serious need of therapy!
They are obnoxious little cheap boxes, made out of cardboard, string and used chewing gum. There's more engineering in the rear hub of an E30 than in the whole of a Clio.
