Any idea about mating an M60 V8 rev to an E30 dash?
Moderator: martauto
Does anyone know the wires I need to swap/things I need to put in to mate the V8 signal to the E30 6cyl dash? I thought about using a 4cyl chip and halving the values, but I don't think it's as simple as that.
Cheers in advance!

You need a signal convertor, about £80 from the states but i guess you could make one for £20?

Simple frequency divider by two, and a four pot coding chip would probably be the simplest route.
I tried looking up the IC in the coding chip, but couldn't find a data sheet on it.

In 1975 I could have drawn you a circuit straight out, but too many brain cells have died since!!SPADGE wrote:A couple of old bog roll tubes and some sticky back plastic accompanied by the Blue Peter 1975 Annual for referenceoze30 wrote:anyone have any ideas about how to make a signal converter???

I've lost all my hair follicles since 75 but thankfully i think most of my brain cells have survived
Col where you hiding or is that monster V8 too thirsty and turned you into a recluse

You've been losing them at a rate of about 20,000,000 a day since you were about 20, spadge, IIRC.

It certainly will, but it's a bit OTT, just to divide by two!ian332isport wrote:One of these will do it.

Ian.
Anyone know anything about the chip inside an E30 coding plug. It's a HML087, which is an eight pin DIL. The circuitry on the PCB is just one pin of the plug o each pin of the chip.
??? You thinking that maybe an e34 coding plug would work? I know they're different shapes, so not sure about a a swap in.Brianmoooore wrote:It certainly will, but it's a bit OTT, just to divide by two!ian332isport wrote:One of these will do it.

[quote="oze30"You thinking that maybe an e34 coding plug would work? I know they're different shapes, so not sure about a a swap in[/quote]I was trying to find out exactly what goes on inside the E30 coding chip, with a view to possibly recoding it, or changing it for a different chip.
Do E34s have a coding plug? I've got a couple of 6 pot E34 clusters here somewhere, but I've no idea off hand.
If a six pot E34 coding plug uses a HML087, then quite possibly the chip from an eight pot E34 will do.

Building /2 frequency shifter is in principal easy, it's justa flip-flop but interfacing with existing circuits and making it withstand the harsh electrical conditions for more than a few minutes will take a little care.
Presumably the M60 and M42 use wasted spark coil packs, using a 4 pot dash and using the M42 ignition pickup wiring on one bank of the M62 should make it look like a 4 pot anyway?

I appreciate that, but it saves a lot of hassle trying to bodge something together.Brianmoooore wrote:It certainly will, but it's a bit OTT, just to divide by two.ian332isport wrote:One of these will do it.

Ian.
Also be aware that the signal coming from the V8 ECU may not simply be twice the frequency of a 4 pot. There's a difference of 12% between the output of my S50 (Siemens MSS50) ECU, and what the cluster is expecting. The Dakota Digital unit is able to fine tune any discrepancies like this, as well as changes in the number of cylinders.
With the current exchange rate, it's not all that expensive.

Ah... if the ecu generates the tacho signal you probably can't get away with treating half the V8 as a 4 pot.

I can't speak for all BMW models, but most Motronic (and later) systems generate the tacho signal in the ECU (probably from the crank sensor). Not sure how the L-Jet or other systems do it. It may come from the coil, but can't say for sure.jkarran wrote:Ah... if the ecu generates the tacho signal you probably can't get away with treating half the V8 as a 4 pot.
