The figures given in the previous thread are correct as far as I know, so about 10% of overall production were autos

Neil - these are the figures I have:
1986 - 352 Manuals - 30 Autos
1987 - 1320 Manuals - 106 Autos
1988 - 208 Manuals - 29 Autos
1989 - 1236 Manuals - 199 Autos
1990 - 812 Manuals - 110 Autos
So 474 (ish)
A lot of these will have died so logic tells me they are now rare.
Are they desirable? If you are going to keep it standard and like autos they are a great car. Ԛ£1900 for a Sport in good condition is a good price - not cheap, but good. BMW only produced 10% in auto and I'm sure they researched the potential demand. I don't suppose that demand has changed that much so it might be harder to sell later on.
In my opinion Sport autos in standard form are not as immediately responsive as a manual on standing starts and town sprints. The engine is 'over square' so the torque converter tends to soak up the power. Once rolling and for higher speed driving there's little or no difference.
If you are looking to develop one for maximum performance and or use on the track, go for a manual.
I have the 2.7 engine in mine which is 'under-square' (high torque)so uses less revs to achieve it's power so the torque converter soaks up less and it reaches the tarmac very effectively. Its a great conversion for an auto.

35..........
and still counting, on my 3rd BM now, E34 525i 24v.
Started out swaping my 90 Nova GTE for a black 85 320i SE, then on to my 89 dolphin 320i SE, which is parked up on the drive, needs bits for MOT.

Thanks to this poll I've just discovered I'm one of only a handful of zoners who's actually older than his car! And there was me out in the sunshine with the top off listening to contemporary driving music - contemporary with me and the car, so old most of you lot won't ever have heard it; ask yer dads!

Always looking for Baur bits
