I've just come off the phone from my insurer regarding the cheap excess that you usually pay for a new windscreen after my E36 Cabrio acquired a crack right in front of the driver :(.

I was well impressed though - when I asked if a BMW main dealer could be arranged to replace the glass, instead of a windscreen specialist, they told me that I could do that without any difference in cost, all I have to do is get the dealer to send the invoice to the claims department, and I pay the same £60 excess! (well I pay the whole amount and they refund me, less the £60).

I was expecting to have to fight for this, and even pay more! My insurer is MoreThan, btw.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

I haven't. But I have wondered about doing something along these lines. I don't know if it's my imaginiation, but the 'screens supplied by the likes of Autoglass seem to scratch very easily.
It's happened to me 3 times now. Twice with Fords and last year with my Touring. The 'screens that come out barely have any scratches on (15 years old the BMW one was) but within a year the replacements are scratched to hell. When I need another for the Touring, I'll probably get a genuine one, fit it myself and send the bill to my insurer.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

I think fitting a windscreen is a bit beyond me!

Also, the '36 doesnt get operated on by 'fists-of-ham' fozzy - it's a bit too nice for that, whereas my frankenstein's monster '30 doesnt mind the odd bodge here or there!

IIRC the E36 'screen is bonded. That would be beyond me, but "old technology" dry-glazed 'screens aren't a problem. I've done loads over the years.

Last time i had mine done i got them to order a BMW screen but Autoglass fitted it.

First woman i spoke to said there is no such thing as a genuine bmw windscreen, i pointed out that was unusal as thats what was fitted to mine at the minute

Eventually got someone that knew what they were talking about and they agreed and same thing, no differeence in excess.

I've often wondered if you loose any no-claims bonus if for windscreen replacement?

doesnt affect anythin at all mate, go to one of those tents they have at supermarkets for example take your insurance doc with you (have to be fully comp think) and they will do there and then for you for nothin providing they do windscreens for your insurer!
