I have a rally project car, a 316 lux (m10) the originall plan was to swap the engine for an m42 but after a bit of research i have discovered the m10 is a bit of a legend????

I have noticed it already has a webber carb on it.......

How expensive are they to tune?

What is a realistic horsepower gain from one??

I don't mind completely rebuilding the engine and i am quite up for learning how to polish the ports.........

They are expensive to tune, consider a cam and some headwork and you've already spent £500, then some ebay bike carbs a DIY inlet and exhaust manifold (assuming you can TIG weld aluminium and can fabricate) and you're on for £1k just to get like 140bhp.

It would be great to drive a highly tuned M10, but it's a lot of money when you consider an m42 costs like £500 all in.

Well i have found a ported head with a 292 degree cam for sale for fairly cheap so im half way there!

Would you say the m10 is a more tunable engine than the m42? because as its a rally car the engine will get tuned alot more over the years......

Tell me more about bike carbs?? :D what are the preffered models to use? are they better than say, using webber DCOE's?? or are they just a cheaper option?

Hi

Most supliers are in the USA due to the 02 cult, Ireland enginering, VAC, Korman, Top end perorfance. In the uk Lister Owen can build you a 240hp m10

Also there was a guide in a back issue of total BMW

M10 is an awesome engine!

100hp per litre N/A is apparently achievable!

Take well to F/I too.

Thanks for the link mate, still doesn't clarify what bike carbs to use though!

I was going to use webber dcoe 45's, do you think these will be better than bike carbs?

I know - the fella concerned did mention which carbs he used in another thread but I can't place that at the moment.

Have a look at this thread regarding twin carb setups

Thanks for that mate, i had already seen it but its a really good read!

I think my first engine mods will be a 292 degree schrick cam, twin dcoe carbs, de fan the engine and fit under driven pullies, this should hopefully see me atleast 130 bhp which will be enough for my first years rallying!

What do you guys think?

Where can i get an intake manifold so i can fit the twin carbs?

Sounds like a good setup and should see somewere around 100-115bhp on a 1.8 m10.

Keep your eye on german ebay for the inlet manifolds from a 2002ti as those had twin 40 solex carbs.

I think 4 carbs from a Suzuki GSX-R1000 or 1100 should suffice.
They would be the equivalent of Weber 40's I think.

A 2 litre M10 will give a good 135bhp just from a cam and carbs.. headwork can be done at home with a dremmel and with a good ignition setup you can push 150bhp for sensible money.. paint the block and polish the head and it will look like a million dollars compared to the M42!

Jason

We meet on all the best forums!

Once I have a certain trackday E21 safely in my workshop, an engine upgrade will be mandatory. Something like that would be very nice, but I fear very expensive! I seem to remember you spending a lot on parts.

I had my E21 engine dynoed. So far as I know standard head/valves, added a weber carb., then a fritz stainless manifold.

All detailed on the e21 forum...

So the moral of the story is don't waste your money on a fritz manifold ! :(

Essentially yes. Some port matching might help, but it doesn't make any significant difference without changing the head. My engine was pretty good to start with, dunno what difference it'd make on something that was in a worse position initially.

The manifold/downpipe are significantly lighter, so maybe that's why the car feels faster!
