My b/f's 1987 e30 has been standing for a while (about 12 months! needs new fuel tank) and by now has got quite a few little rust spots on it, and as it has been parked under a tree the paintwork is looking pretty manky.

He wants it re-sprayed (its diamond black), how much would this cost roughly? i am assuming its Ԛ£1000+?

It wouldnt particularly add to the value of a car that only cost Ԛ£900 in the 1st place would it?

sorry i seen this been discussed b4... well about resprays. But would you say its worth re-spraying it?

Its a 1987 diamond black 2dr. genuine 54k on the clock.. mot's to prove it. b/f had it 5 years and done about 10k... its his baby.

He has spent loads on it, services it himself but with genuine bmw parts including the plugs and filters. He now wants to re-spray it.. and replace the interior.. i know its a nice car.. but is it worth the re-spray?:

Hi Hanah

I guess it depends on where you go, My 325 for example is in for pretty drastic surgery !!

I took her in for rear arch replacements and rust around the sunroof plus what i thought was a small patch to repair on the front wing, but when the M tech bits were removed to true condition was plain to see.

2x wings, repair to font scutle panel, weld patch to both inner sills, repair to rear boot floor /under battery, new rear panel,+ repair to sunroof.and wheel arches.

with all this work done, now requires a respray , because he's a buddy it's going to be Ԛ£1200 for job, so i recon you should buget around Ԛ£1400-Ԛ£1500

I've had an older car in for spray job before it was an old Series 1 RS Turbo, and once the job started the bill just kept getting higher and higher.. At the time i went to what was supposed to be the best spray shop in the area, which cost a fortune. and I was never 100% happy with the end result.

If I ever do it again, I will ask around a bit and probably go somewhere a little cheaper, at least then if I'm not 100% happy I will not have spent as much money!!!

By the way the est quote for the job was approx Ԛ£1200, ended up into the Ԛ£2000's!!!

Thanks
Wilson

basicly its down to how much you want to spend, a cheap re-spray will freshen things up but the finish might not be the best and the rust could come back. at the other end of the scale you could get a factory fresh mirror finish and peace of mind that the rot will be gone for good
hope this helps

well if you in the trade yes. other wise 400 for a respray will not be a good job. its the prep that is important more than anything. and simple hours labour clock up the cost on decent respray jobs.

i would expect 1000 MINIMUM for a decent job. so many chav cars get done and the paint is just bloody awfull!
