oh dear there's one born every minute and there just isn't enough bullets. The zone is brimming with them these days.
I nearly fell out my chair when you said you're a mechanic. i wouldn't let you change the tax disc over in my car let alone change the oil.

Not going to lock it yet - murrans a man after my own heart!
Found a new boxed oil filter in the rear cubby hole of a touring I bought, once. Doesn't fit any E30 definitely, but it's still sitting on my filter shelf. I'll find a use for it one day!

im not getting personal, i dont even know any of you folks! just keeping it as light hearted car based banter. we all have different takes on e30s and different subjects. we all see what we want to see and i see things and make choices that other people may or may not think stupid, but i dont care.........HairyScreech wrote:aye, wasnt a dig at murran but the thread just seemed to be getting a tad personal.

The oil filter that I buy for my Daimler is listed as one for a tractor.....we shall need knowledge of this kind of parts interchangability in the future,if we are to keep on running old cars.Remember Practical Classics running a pullout list a few years back?

I'm quite interested in this thread..
While I wouldn't bother in this country to not put the "right" filter in the my car - I possibly may find myself in the future in a situation where I have no choice (I'm planing on driving down through Africa) -
Are there really major differences in Oil filters - apart from if it will physically fit or not and the quality of the actual filter?

an engine is an engine and so require the same quality of filtration from a skoda favorit to an audi 90, modern cars are different having v fine oil ways, smaller tolerances, fancy chain tensioners, roller rockers and other bullsh1t. most oil filters for our period of cars filter down to the same size particals. most canister filters have valves in to bypass oil if its blocked and to hold oil in the filter and oil gallerys. some dont have valves in at all, take filter elements for example. as a rule if a canister oil filter will fit it should work ok and filter the oil, only danger really is of oil being let back into sump thru the oil filter valve not being right, on start up there might be a big delay in the engine starting and pressure being built up. but youd probably have to start the car 100s of times to cause damage if you had say a 5 second delay.....

Nice one Murran, I'm impressed.
That's £3 closer to a hooligan-tastic weekend in Wales.
I do approve.
And on a side note...
Simon13?
WTF?
Tell ya what, you're doing wonders for E30zones reputation pal.
Proven wrong, and without the good grace to apologise for being not just rude, but out and out hostile?
Oh, and wrong?

Simon, little harsh of you to post that, if you got one laying around that looks like it would fit, it's worth asking incase it does, not only does it save you 3 quid but it also gets rid of a spare part laying about.
I've been on the same air field as murran, for the time that my jap crap survived anyway and he in no way deserves to be slagged off like he has, as this boy uses his E30 like he should, sideways allot!!
And for the comment of saving bandwidth....a simple yes or no would have done, not avoiding the answer by flaming him just for asking a question.

some peole are brand snobs and will only put things that are stampped "BMW" on their car.
a filter is a filter, it takes the crap out of oil period.
if you need a brake servo you can always use the golf servo, or a clio servo works too !!
the e30 shares parts with a few models anyway, VW, Volvo .................

Ok, congratulations on working this out. If I had a spare filter on my shelf I would have had a go myself. I have had a filter for a Porsche 944 2.5 on my shelf for around 16 years, I really must get it out of the box!
You can't knock people for being sceptical about these things. Most people would not logically risk their engine for a few quid either. You did it and that's great - it's worked.
I would say that if I was going to buy a reasonably decent old BMW that I would wonder what was going on if I found a VW filter fitted. It would please me greatly to find a genuine BMW one though. No surprise really is it!

well i wouldnt have fitted it on my m3 (if i had one, which i wouldnt cus i wouldnt be able to knock the corners off it) but my 265 quid 320i touring with 0 service history, its a different matter..... plus it needs a 325 in it anyway, so wouldnt be too gutted if it did blow up, id just treat it as an oppertunity to get my ass in gear.....
