e36 boot lock

today my boot failed to unlock by the central locking which normally works. i put the key in and normally you feel a slight resistance and hear a motor noise and it unlocks but now theres nothing, it turns freely and wont unlock so my boot cannot be opened, this being the missus' car shes been bending my ear all night to sort it so any ideas would be much appreciated
