No idea, but no light, my target weight is 950kg without me. One of my friends hit sub 920kg all metal panels, only difference between miine and his is he removed the underseal. But his custom cage is a bit more custom if you know what I mean.northloop wrote:I wonder how much the custom cage weighs Jimmy. I didnt bother to weigh mine before I fitted it, but wish I had.
Have you had yours on the scales yet, I would be interested in what it comes in at. I would like to be under 1000kg's with mine, but I dont think I will make it, too much scaffolding on there I think
Hoping to get it MOTd next week if I can get a full weekends work on it next weekend, then corner wieghted and setup the following couple of weeks.
My dash comes back tomorrow, got it done with the guy you recommended

Jimmy c - I couldn't see the previous pics - there was just a red cross ..
Northloop - As for cage weight, my OMP 6 point bolt it was 35 kgs with door bars - so I'd imagine the SD one will be slightly more..??
Great thread - keep it coming so I can be learning!

Llyodie- exceeded my bandwidth on my webspace, i'll sort it tomorrow
agreen- flocked because it looks cool
thats about it really, aparently the flocked dash is none reflective so you dont get the dash reflecting on the screen in the sun. But I got itr done purely for the bling factor

I'd agree with Jimmy on the cage front agreen and PZero. For track days from all my question asking at the time an OMP cage would be fine, but consider you might get the bug and want to do PBMW too....
If you want a bog standard OMP cage that does not have the cross bar (so this would have to be added for PBMW) another contact is Kevin Gordon from Crombie Carversions Company and he will do the cage for around 365GBP delivered. OMP allegedly have put their prices up a bit so you might expect to pay an extra 20 over this, but Kevin was a sound guy and gave me quite a lot of advice even though I din't end up going for that cage.
His website is www.crombiecarversioncompany.com and they have built track cars for around 20 years.
Jimmy,
Are you adding any more green LEDS maybe in the dash too?? Will you not have to add weight if you are at 950kg?
Cage is assembled in car now and doesn't require dash modifying, starting measuring up for mounting plates now.

FX switch, 2 buttons for the battery isolator, water warning light, oil warning linght, starter button and flip switch ignition, with ignition light, not to mentioin the bracket I just started making tonight for the lap timer
Yep balast it up baby!! Since I started the build i've lost around 2 1/2 stone so i'm quite a bit lighter than originally planned, as I was the balast
Good stuff mate, glad things are coming together on yours. Theres a number of us heading to Silverstone for the Birket if you fancy it? 2 PBMW teams and some other Pre 93 teams

Wow! that looks good. But I am too lazy to remove my dashboard again
Sounds impressive mate. It's going to look like the dash of fighter jet before you are finished!! I like the flocked dash.....you've got me tempted!!
I got the heat gun on the sound deadening the other night and started the teadeous petrol and rag job cleaning the glue off..... what fun!! I'm tempted to get a compressor now and repaint the interior once the cage is in permanently.
Ohhh, and I like those door panels.....
Will give you a call to catch up and about Birket.

Well another glorious weekend of working on the race car
My bloody dash still hasn't turned up so was somewhat halted on my plans
but still got loads done.
I got the FX fitted, plumbed and wired in, very pleased with a nice neat instalation. I have a FEV electric system and its so much neater than the mechanical system I previously had.
I'll get some pics next weekend, really pleased with it all.
Also finalised some of the wiring, and mounting all the clips to hold the loom out the way
Also slung this in:

again much neater and easier to install that the other type that requires pull cables etc to be run
Wired in mission control, so I know have my starter button working- keys been binned, my water and oil warning lights all wired in, just need the bloody dash back to finish the car before setting the car up.
Will get updated pics up soon

Any chance of a pic of the dash? I'm currently ripping out the standard clocks/gauges in mine and am trying to work out what to replace them with. Have you changed the tacho and have you replaced the temp gauge with an idiot light?

Shorty, I have left the instrument cluster as standard, bar adding in the shift light in the block where the check comp light used to be.
The rest is all where the radio used to be, warning lights etc and when I get some more cash prob next year now the centre vents will be replaced with a blanking plate holding, oil temp, pressure gauges
Dash is back now and will be going in Sunday so will get some pics up then
......i'll also sort out all the other pics that have gone due to download limits

I was planning the same thing. I want to move all the stalk controls, headlights and any other switchgear to toggle switches on an aluminium panel mounted in the space where the radio and heater controls should be.
Exactly what I've done. I've got 6 toggle switches and the main isolator on a panel with a sub panel for start button ignition/kill switch and fuel pump with extinguisher pull. Will take a photo when it's finished.
Centre vents have been replaced with another ally panel for lap timer and rev limiter.
Just need to know if messing with the speedo console looms will effect the ecu in any way.

What a great weekend!
Went to watch the Birkett on Saturday at Silverstone, what a great event! Definately something i'll be trying to do next year.
Then real progress on the car on Sunday
I'd say i'm 99% there now- at last!!
The pics are a bit shitty as I was working in my tiny garage sheltering from the rain yeaster day, but you'll get the idea
So some pics of last weeks FX install:
Bottle mounted to the car, and you can just make out the pipe work and wiring running around and down the tunnel.

Nozzle and control unit mounted to the tunnel, the other in car nozzle will be mounted facing the fuse box, just need to ponce a rivnut gun to do that one.

The ecu has been move as the cage means mounting in the standard position is a no go, and it also needs to be accessible to swap at race meets if the scrutineers wnt to.
The external button is mounted as below, with the electrical cutoff next to it

You can see the nozzles in the engine bays in the below pics:

Note the quality use of mole grips to connect the battery
thats being sorted tonight as I didn't have any connectors at the weekend.
The in car button is mounted to mission control

Along with the starter button and ignition, the alternator warning light, water and oil warining lights. The lap timer is to mount in the clocks old hole- just got to make the bracket up first.
I got the wiring as tidy as possible, sad I know but the wiring is the job i'm most pleased with myself about.

Got the lovely flocked dash in and all fitted up, bit of bling around the instrument cluster- Love a bit of bling

Seat and harnesses also chucked in

So I have 5 jobs to sort this week before the MOT:
1) wire the battery in properly
2) get some number plate lights and fit them
3) get some washer bars (going for merc sprinter ones) and fit them
4) put the horn back on and wire in a new switch for that
5) stick some number plates on
Then after the MOT, just some set up, doorcards and a trip to the rolling road to get it running right (its running like shite ate the mo)

Jimmy,
Car looks awesome mate. I like the flocked dash and the switches all positioned in the old radio location. Keep up the good work and let us know when it's on the road!!
Progress has been a bit slow on mine but getting there.

Well its kind of the second time its gone back together, so I knew everything that annoyed me from the previous time it was slung together.
Everything is just where I want it this time, and its a nice comfortable place to be- just what you want in a race car
Most of the other racers think i'm nuts with the detail i've followed through, but I always wanted to build a car that was "special" to me anyway, rather than a "shed". The plan has always been to keep the car for along time, and if I move on from PBMW to find a series that allows me to keep the car and just do an engine transplant.
The starter button is quite simple, my mate helped me out as he's done loads but its basically 4 wires from the barrel, 2 are not needed- we just tested them all with a test lamp as we went to work out what went where- i have to take the couling off the steering wheel again to fit the horn switch there so i'll see what colours go where for you.

Well after another few hours on the car over the weekend its ready for MOT
weekends jobs included:
Finalising wiring the isolator in properly, and bolting that down properly
Wiring in the horn
Wiring in the number plate lights
fitting a wiper mounted screen wash (curtosy of a royal mail van, my mate was working on)
fitting the final FX nozzle
Still 14 things left to do on my list though
