just getting back into the project, and here's a few pics. Just to note the web address used to be the website, but is no longer. i will post on here every so often to show updates, and hopefully keep myself motivated to get the bloody thing on the road.
e24/ e28 rad. Managed to get a new one off ebay for £51.50 delivered. Lucky, as they are 129.99 from Euro.

Image

I had to clear the front a bit, as it hasn't been touched much in the last 6 months, so everything was starting to grow over it.

Image

Rad seems massive, and definetly needed some slight mods to get it to fit.
Image

engine is as far back as it can go on the de mounts.
Image

Image

Image

bugger all clearance. but i can angle the bottom of the rad a little more to get more than paper clearance next week hopefully.

Image

Image

Image

almost in!

Image

taped off downpipe to help stop it rubbing across the front of the engine.

Image

original top mount fits nicely, but could do with holding the rad 1>2mm closer to the front bulkhead.

Image

Image

i will need to extend the bottom pipe so that it reaches correctly.

I did interior work as well, and some cleanup, thats in the styling thread. might post link here if i remember to.

Goldfish memory served me well, and here's that link.

not the best pic, but this is the .de mounts, and you can jsut about make out, its mounted on the second hole, so making the engine as far back as possible.

looking good

you can free up a little more space for the rad by cutting the front 'V' off the front pulley as it's for aircon so redundant (i assume?!). look for the welds and grind them away.

also, if you fit some of those captive nut thingies in the front panel, the E28 rad mountings can be used and hold the rad flush with the front panel, them bottom can then either have a fancy arrance ment to holt it back or in my case, some re-usable tye wraps! :D

oh, the bottom rad hose on mine is E28 and reaches ok

sounds good thanks.

this is the one part i have really struggled with. I have the engine mounted as far back as it will go, and was hoping to fit the 324d fan i have for it, but it looks like no chance.

I 've fabbed up my own bottom mounts, using stainless bar through the bottom mounts that i expect are used in the original car?

The pully isn't in the way so much, for me its the dizzy cover thats about 1.5>2mm away.

engine is mounted on hd poly bushes, as is the gearbox, and diff, so this will keep to a minimum any movement.

I will look out for the e28 top mounts. Do they use the two big side pieces? i had to cut one side piece off to get the rad to go lower, so could only use one of these if so?

any idea on which pipe the thermostat pipe goes to. I'll ry that again!..

the pipe that comes off the thermostat housing, it goes to the back of the engine, and then to which pipe on the heater matrix, top or bottom? i have a new hose that splits this, so i will have to "adjust" it a little.

The m20 radiator has big fat end caps. which means that it can be fitted, but it has to be fitted at an odd angle. THe e24/e28 radiator as from the pics above, is thinner, but much wider. Also the end caps are alot smaller as in they are not thicker than the actual radiator itself.

Using this radiator will give you better cooling, and a much simpler installation. although still not simple simple.

my dizzy cap is about that close. i have e30.de mounts with a third hole drilled for position 2.5ish. poly mounts will help, though i've had no problems so far.

the E28 mounts use the 'lugs' on the side of the rad.

electric is probably better.... u can set temp u want it to come in at, and it reduces the inertia of the moving components of the engine as the engine doesnt need to spin the viscous anymore...

its the fan off the e30 324d. I have it, but i don't think its going to fit mine. If i won't i will put it up here before the ebay lot.

Just to update again.

My matey is making me a complete stainless front bumper support for the m3 front bumper, as all i have is the skin. Sounds and looks like a massive job, but nobody appears to have one in the 2 years i have been looking!

my bday this weekend, but i may get around to doing some more work.

What bottom hose do i need to fit from engine to bottom of rad? mine's too short? the e28 one you say? mortgage coming through soon, and the missus may get me a little something for a life of commitment and renovation.

Lol, she jsut read it... wasn't entirely too impressed
