I am building an e30 rally car and trying to decide on a 2ltr class engine,

Has anyone got any info on fitting a 16v redtop into an e30? is there a bell housing available to fit the engine to a 316 gearbox??

If that doesn't work out, how much work is involved in getting around 200bhp out of a 318is engine (without forced induction!)??

You may be better asking over on the BMW Rallying forum.

Lots of knowledgeable people over there

Hi

If you want to use a 2.0l either got for a duratec, lighter and more power out of than box than a redtop and you can buy a bellhousing to take a ford type9 or use a mx5 box, or a complete s2000 drive train.

IF you want a bmw solution use a 2.0 s14 200hp no problems.

S2000 drivetrain on stock Honda loom & management is going to be very hard to beat on performance or reliability. Have you checked what this will be eligble for, there's been talk for a couple of years of banning different make engine swaps in rallying, maybe it's (sensibly) been abandoned?

That said there's loads of Ford gearbox kits available, worth a thought when choosing a 'box.

Thanks guys, just did a little research and both other options are a bit over budget! :o

I tried registering to that rally forum but i never got the e-mail to activate my acc, i might try again if its good.

What sort of budget setups would you reccomend?

The Cheapest 2.0.l option is an m10 but the power would not be as good as a 1.8 m42.

The cheapest power is to tune a m42 with throttle bodies, cams and stand alone not 200hp but close. To go to a red top I guess you are going to need mounts, manifold and bellhousing in addition to any engine mods, so save the money using an oem engine and do not get hung up on the extra 200cc as the cost of getting that extra 200cc is probably the most £/BHP your going to spend on an m42

Sounds li8ke a plan mate, will a 318is mount onto a 1.6 gearbox??

What about fitting carbs to an is? as im in jersey i would need to take the car to england to get the stand alone mapped which will be mega bucks!

Is a 2.1 is conversion 2.1l?? if so that pushes me up a class to race with cossie etc

I think Simon (the guy that runs the forum) manually activates the accounts, so you may have to wait for him to log in and see your registration request.

Ok cheers mate.

What about the m44 engine? do you think that will have more tuning potential being a 1.9??

Plius will these engins drop onto the same mounts??

Thanks for your help guys!

Hi

The m42 is more tunable and if you have an 1.6m40 base car the swap is striaghtforward. The m42 runs electronic ignition.

Tim_S has built a m42 2.1 on throttle boddies so use the search function.

Stand alone with Megasquirt or VEMS is easy to self map with target AFR's and there are several guys who can send you a copy of there maps as a base.

Also check www.m42club.com

hi ,im building a red top turbo out of my 318i e30,cheep as chips,i am into opel mantas aswell, sold that shell so wanted something great to put the turbo engine in, so along came my e30,the red top already had the manta ally winged sump which is very hard and expensive to find and buy,you can take the steel sump off a 20ltr cavalier 8v to fit the 16v and cut and weld to clear e30 crossmember you can use the older square type omega v6 rubber engine mountings thats a straight swop for the 1.8 bmw ones they are slightly taller, wider, you will need to make steel engine mountings to fit the engine in ,had to make a choice with my engine as it had the ally manta sump which has the deep winged part of the sump at the back of the engine,so had to loose the heater box and all heater controls, because i wanted to keep the ally sump ,had to cut the baulkhead back about 10"so the dizzy could fit and could get at the gearbox bolts from under the bonnet you could find a red top with a dizzyless ignitoin system the bottom pulley is about 6" in front of the steering rack so the engine sits right back in the bay great for handling, the gear box is from a manual v6 omega but they are all the same manual gearbox's on omega's and they all have hydrolic clutches, the auto boxe's have a removable bellhousing quess you could mod that to fit a type 9 ford gearbox lot of money to do that i quess ,smb developments (vauxhall tuners), do kits for the type 9 ford box to the 16v engine,i used all the original ecu, turbo clutch, ect you could use the turbo clutch on a stanard 16v as long as you have the same flywheel as the turbo, flywheels inter changeable, thats as far as ive got mate good luck with you choice, thats the cheapest way to a good light, revy engine, and tunnable to winkeye

That amount of work sounds beyond my ability!

Can anyone give me a price breakdown of tuning the m42??

How much are cams, throttle bodies stand alone etc etc??

As i have just re-read your post and understand it a little better i now understand that the only reason you cut away at your bulk head is because you wanted to save your alloy sump??

So am i right in saying that all i will need to do is modify the original sump to make the redtop (non turbo) fit??

yes mate all that is needed to fit it in is (if you dont wont to go the root i did) is a steel sump, pick up pipe from a 2.0ltr 8v engine, cavalier, astra, calibra, the 16v comes with a ally sump which would be exspensive to mod,use the 16v sump gasket and oil baffle, you might have to mod the baffle if you mod the sump to fit the bmw crossmember,if you can get one with a distributor less ignition you can move the engine closer to the boulkhead, but the 16v engine has a coolent pipe that comes out the back of the head which must not ever be blanked off get the ecu and the engine loom with the engine and thats it the rest you have read already. 8)
