This is the only pic I have of the car. It's from the original sellers ad.

Everything standard except for the delocking of the doors. I'm gonna fit an alarm that works the central locking (fitted a few in my time) so my mate can unlock the car without having to use the boot lock :D

So anyway...this weekend this car should be the proud owner of a 50K mile M42 lump from an e36.....I hope.....

I think it's the lip that some have fitted to the front of the bonnet, but not sure.

Yeah the car is really clean. Can't find any rust at all. Even the join at the inner wingsand bulkhead is still gleaming white.

Just unfortunate that it's chain engine decided to snap it's chain. Dunno why yet. Once the old lump is out I'll have a look. I'm suspecting either the split link broke, or the chain came off a worn cog on the crank and then got chewed by the other moving parts. It went when he was doing about 70mph !!

He's just unlucky with cars. I've known this guy for over 30 years and every car since he passed his test 19 years ago I've had to fix for him. Don't think any car he's owned has never broken down on him.

I'm gonna wait until he does get a car that doesn't break, then I'm gonna buy one the same as it'd have to be indestructable !!!

you'll pay around the £50 mark, i bought mine for £50 from Spadge and it is mint, but you can get them cheaper or you can still buy them from bmw for roughly £100

the more and more stories i hear of M42 chains snapping, the more concerned i get. mine has done 116k and has slight rattle. what was the mileage on this engine marlon?

95K was the mileage, but I wouldn't worry.
We swapped the engines today. Still gotta wire everything back up etc. Will do that tommorrow.

Anyway, I had a look at the engine that broke. There is evidence of a rebuild ( I've rebuilt lots of Alfa engines so can spot the signs ;) ) and it is clear that the split link on the chain failed. I'm guessing an error was made, or the little circlip for the split link was damaged when put back on and eventually it has actually fallen off. So it wasn't a chain snap as such, possibly down to poor workmanship in the past.

ajay my 132000 mile is chain was hanging off when I had it and it was still great. I changed it at 133k if your that worried about your duplex chain I would suggest replacing it as it will cost about 200 quid and your can will be sound for another 120k..

remember boys the 318is is the best car in the world... obviously after the e30 m3!
