I bought a 535i a while back to take the engine out and put it into my e30, it had been stood for about a year before I got it, and ive had it about 6 months more. Anyway its now close to conversion time so ive started taking time to see if its all ok, an running properly etc

Anyways as you can here it sounds very tappety? but do they even have tappets? I havent looked inside the engine yet, but id rather go in with a better idea as im still learning.

Ive heard the 318is has a chain driving belt same as the m30, and the tensioner can fail, which sounds like tappets, could it be that?

Or is it tappets? If so where can I get replacements.

As you can tell im not properly clued up, but im in no rush, and I want to learn, all advice appreciated, what do you all think? :?

I can't get the video to play, probably because I'm on AOL and it's rubbish.

Injectors can also be noisy.

Timing chain is tensioned with a hydraulic tensioner, not heard of one failing but if it did I'm sure there would be rattles.
I've had an oil pump chain tensioner break but that didn't make any noticable noise.
A worn timing chain and camshaft sprocket could possibly be audible.

There was a modification on the oil spray bar banjo bolts.
The older type can come loose, starving the camshaft of oil.

They do get rattly top ends.
My first port of call would be the manually adjustable valve clearances, not a bad job to do, and free! :)

If that doesn't quieten it down and it bothers you it could be head re-build time.
