hi, i'm building a road rally 318is and i've come to the point where i have to choose a cage. i'm going for a bolt in cage.

now i know SD are the best bolt in but £700 is just too much to spend on a cage for a £400 car.

i went to demon tweeks in september to pick up some brake lines and while i was there i got some quotes.
sparco 10 point cage was £450 +vat,
then they told me that they had 2 omp cages in for an e30 but they didn't fit. the reason was something like they were for an M3. i thought all E30's had the same basic shell (i know there are differences pre/post facelift)? would i have to get a cage for a post facelift car?

i'd like to go for the omp cage as, sadly, cost is the deciding factor. has anyone fitted the omp cage? any advice on fitting and purchasing would be very welcome. :)

thanks
alan.

If they are DT customer returns, they were sold for an E30 but were nowhere close, one is from Gaz, should be a post below somewhere where he wasted a couple of weeks trying to get it to fit before sending it back. Nothing wrong with OMP when the right cage is supplied. The guy from the IoM (Lloydsomething) has one so will probably be some pictures of the fit on his site.

An M3 cage will fit your car. But if it was a return then maybe it wouldnt fit the M3 either

I might be wrong here and you guys have done your homework, but I was under the impression that for Rally cars only weld in cages are permitted?

Alan,

I'm putting a cage in my 318is, looked at omp also, but eventually settled on one of these

weichers 6 point bolt in, with a cross and harness bar, 630 euros, or 425 of the queens pounds, Not sure if theres a Uk distributor but its worth a search, from what I've heard they are a good cage

looks like this

i am buying a saftey devices for my 318is track and road car

it took numorious threads and many hard thinking sesions but the way i look at it and belive me i have resereched this is as follows

an omp cage does NOT come painted

Omp cages do NOT have demovable door bars they are weld in and this means it would be dificult to get the cage out again after fitting if say you were gonna upgrade to an m3 later on in life

Omp cages do NOT have a cross over in the rear section so the harness can not be secured in the right posision IMO

omp cages have smaller diameter tubing than the sd cages omp look skinny and weak althought they are probally not next to a sd cage

and the final thing is like i say a sd cage what £700 and omp £ 400 around so

£400 for the cage 100 quid for materials to paint it, 100 quid to weld the doorbars in perhaps?,and the cages some of it need to be painted in the car as the door bars like i say need to be welded in and if there are no more cost which there WILL be unless you fit the whole thing yourself then the sd cage is almost the same pri ce as the omp and imo not worth it go for omp otherwise you are gonna be sitting at the side of the track, or whatever , and someone in there 318isis gonna pull up next to you , witha sd cage you are gonna see the ovrsized tubing and powder coated goodness and kick youself because you did not just wait and save

i hoipe this help and all these factors are why i am in the processs of getting a sd cage (should order on friday )

like i say the above views are IMHO and not the views of everyone else so no quotes saying it does not cost this much etc please thanks and i hope you get the right cage for your needs and it is hastel free

thanks for the replies,

the fitting and painting is not a big issue for me as long as the hard points are within a few inches of where they should be
my friend has a 205 with the omp 6 point fitted which he inverted at some speed a few weeks ago so i have faith in the strength and quality of the omp.

my main point of confusion was that tweeks said it didn't fit - thanks to Brian28 for clearing that up :)

agreen - you have a good point, the SD isn't that much more than the omp but on my pittiful wage it's the difference between doing my first rally in january and doing it in april, and i can't wait that long

cheers guys, i'll let you know how i get on.

I have a OMP cage.

It is bolt in , It does come with a cross in the rear section and the door bars are removable.

The fitting isn't the easiist but then again no cage will be.

OMP Cage in my 325 - Cage bought off Deemon Twonks for £425

Yes it did need paining and yes it was a pain and yes it only looks Ok but for track days it's fine. If and when I start rallying I'll get some more cage bars welded in.

BTW On the last track day of 16 cars I was the only one with a cage and harnesses 8O

no the saftey devices to fit behind the dash at either side beeter imo and the door bars look alot better than an omp and has a cross and harness bars

the dash needs cutting at the back on either side

when we did a track day at brands we didnt have a cage or harness but the amount of people who had mounted their harness's incorectly was amazing.
