Spending 7k on an E30 is pointless in a financial point of view, you will never get it back!
7k in bricks and mortar might be a more sensible option.

its as valid an opinion as any. i agree it is silly really to spend big cash on old cars but for me its a hobby to keep me out of troublerossle wrote:now i can see why your heading for the naughty room....Andyboy wrote:If I were to spend 7k on a car, it wouldn't be on an E30. i know you will never get the money back but it dont mean its a waste of money if thats what you want...
i would rather have an e30 over most other cars. and money is money to me, it dont mean anything, just paper..
you cant take money to the grave...

You will if you use it to invest in an E30 thats not going to loose money of looked after, ie an M3, Alpina, or a mint sport. These are only going to go up in value.maxfield wrote:Spending 7k on an E30 is pointless in a financial point of view, you will never get it back!
On the other hand blow 7K on a touring or something just as mundane you will not get it back but who cares?
Average People spend 15-20k on a sensible hatch and loose at least half that in 5 years.

Totally agree with Rossie and Fuzzy but there was recently an article on the radio saying that investing in German classic cars was a better bet than bricks and mortar at the moment. Now whether an E30 can be classed as a Classic German car is another question.

Yes i uderstand your point max, was just agreeing with fuzzy and rossie that spending money on something you
is never a waste of money whilst pointing out that its not just bricks and mortar that can earn you a return on your dosh.

New cars generally suck anyway - ugly, characterless, under engineered, disposable feeling, over complicated etc.
I'd concentrate on getting the car mint first of all, get rid of all that damned rust and get it resprayed. Shouldn't be a lot more than 2k depending on current condition (unless you go for an all out bare metal job). Then onto the interior which should cost very little unless the seats are nackered. Personally I think there's nothing more satisfying than a mint looking car, especially an e30.
From there i'd move onto suspension, decent shocks, springs, roll bars and poly bushes.
Brakes - SS brake hoses.
Engine - This is where I can never decide! How about an M50.
That must all be safely under 7k.

Max

This is exactly the route i have taken with my sport. Ive done the body work then the interior, just done the suspension and now onto the engine.BMracing wrote:I'd concentrate on getting the car mint first of all, get rid of all that damned rust and get it resprayed. you buy a new car take it off the forecourt well theres money lost you keep it for a couple of years
and put some miles on it even more lost so unless you have got something special all cars are a waste of money

£7K:
1st choice....E34 M5 3.8
2nd Choice....E30 M3
That order because a) I already have a decent E30 M3 (although currently undergoing a full engine rebuild and mild uprating) and
b) because £7k would buy a reasonable E34 M5 at the moment, but not too many decent E30 M3s around at that figure any more...

with £7k I'd get an S50 fitted, refresh the suspension and look at the brakes.
And yes, it would have to be a touring for the better weight distribution and looks.
