inlet manifold not seated correct? did you have this off when you did the head? use new gaskets?

spray WD40 over the manifold where it bolts to the head with the car ticking over, if the idle is very briefly bought back to normal you have an air leak on one of the the gaskets

check all hoses going to throttle body

On here, yes!
Not really a good idea to bring yourself to the attention of the mods on your second post, is it?

Can you describe the hunting abit better, what rpms, whats the mpg like, how is the ignition system (rotor arm cap ect...), what year is the car. A little bit more detail required.

the idle doesnt go up or down it the revs basically stay the same .the engine just drones and hunts not badly but its not right .i left the head complete with the manifolds attached .. only the trottle body came off i checked that .and changed the the inlet rubber which the air box attaches to. would the ecu cause a problem like this ? the car does about 260miles on a tank with speeds of 80 mph .. im not up on injection systems .but the problem reminds me of a faulty advance and retard on a carbruettor . but not a servere .thanxx...mart

It should idle at 750rpm hot and about 900rpm cold is it? You can check for inlet manifold leaks to the head as they are common spray some wd40, carb cleaner around the inlet manifold and see if you can here the engine note change. Does it smell rich at idle? Also there are different versions of the M20B25 engine depending of the age of the car and it will make a big difference on what you can check how you check it and how you adjust it.

You must remember we can't see or hear your car so we can only offer suggestions on the information you give us the more detail about the car, what you've tried or changed and description of the problem the better.

I had problems with my 325 idling-was doing this hunting too.
I changed all manifold gaskets and elbow joint rubber. I cleaned throttle body and icv and still had same prob.
Changed the icv which improved slightly but still hunting and was beginning to p**s me off.
Then read in "BMW restoration manual"about splitting the throttle position sensor, thoroughly cleaning it until it clicks on and off properly.
Did that and it worked!!! Wished I had done it initially when I stipped manifold.
Touchwood , idling perfectly hot and cold as described above.
Maybe worth a try?
